Talking about Brasil (which is where Europeans seem to point) I think that this is highly simplistic;.....

You're accusing the Guardian of being 'simplistic', how dare you? :) Anyway, I imagine it's probably just as simplistic to pick up on any agricultural product and blame it for something or other.

And that's as off topic as I'm prepared to go.

Don't forget that Brazilian farmers can get 2 crops of soya per year, so in effect produce twice as much crop without twice as much land.
Brazil also grows huge amounts of sugar cane. Most of it gets used for bio-fuel.

Rising population and rising affluence is what wrecks the planet, take not you 4 kid families with a Range Rover. We don't have half a dozen planets for that sort of life style.

Don't know if this has already been posted as I havn't managed to read ALL this brilliant thread - but Lenovo is IBM under licence.
I bought one of their 'Idea Centre's' last year instead of a laptop 'cos I don't lug one around and have been really pleased with it

I've got a few IBM / Lenovo laptops and they are still excellently made, although not of the legendary build quality of say the x60 or T60 / z61p etc series models from around 2006. I even have one IBM G40 that was actually made by Acer, but this was a one off and an excellent computer for the time in 2003. I find that IBM / Lenovo laptops perform better than the specs suggest they will, because other brands with the same spec often perform terribly in direct comparison. You get what you pay for!

If you download an app called myfitnesspal there is an icon for adding foods via a barcode reader. I checked Aldi products.... there are a lot more but here are an interesting few

    Mango chutney scanned as Sharwoods
    Norpak scanned as Anchor
Cucini pizza scanned as Tesco Pepperoni Pizza
Redcurrant jelly scanned as Tesco Finest
Onion chutney scanned as Sainsbury's Taste the Difference

All the above were a lot cheaper at Aldi.

Just tried the app and so far ive found that Morrisons light Mayo showed up as Hellmans Light mayo.

Just done a quick scan, bit of a random 1.

Morrisons sweet piccalilli scans as Heinz Mild mustard Pickle
Dunns river Coconut Milk scans as Blue Dragon coconut Milk
Sainsbury's carton of Custard 500g scans as Ambrosio Custard
Morrisons Golden Syrup scans as Asda's own Golden Syrup
Morrisons French Glace Cherries scans as Whitworths French Glace cherries.
Sainsburys TTD tomato and mascarpone pasta sause scans as Napolina Tomato and Mascarpone Pasta sauce.

Scanned a few lidl items we have but didnt scan as a brand or shops own brand.

I wonder how accurate it is.

That doesn't mean they are the same product, it merely means they have the same barcode number - no information is actually stored on the barcode about the product.

There is technically no reason why Aldi brand washing up liquid couldn't have the same barcode as Tesco Finest Lasange.
