so are you actually saying that women should waste their precious resources (physical, emotional energy, time etc) for the good of a man who can't function using their own resources, and from what you are saying would not be able to reciprocate (maybe in exchange for a good salary, handyman work around the house... chances are they would not be very good with kids either...).
So why would a good woman need a man like that in her life? I think she'd be better off on their own.

Luckily not all men are like you describe, there are many many men out there who can give as much as they receive (practically and emotionally, both important aspects of a relationship), and treat their partner as their equal.

Don't want to hijack this topic so I will only add this reply and no more on the subject. First of all I agree with you! I was actually just teasing you a little about gender ability although there is some truth in it, i.e. men cannot be mothers and vice versa. Also the tide has changed in the last thirty years or so, and women are now very sly and seek out men who will be their lapdogs and provide them with more than they actually deserve. You now see ungrateful lazy obese women, that have never done a days housework or proper cooking in their lives and are shameless about it too. They also pay for everything to be done much like your father does, so it seems things women finally have morphed into sloth-like men! Women now, particularly the younger generations just dump their children on the grandparents and !!!!!! off to work, because it beats doing the real tough housework back home. My own mother is a housewife of the 1950s vintage (she is 73) and is under no illusion which is the hardest work! Unlike todays so called housewives, she has never had the time to sit on her backside drinking wine while waiting for the junk food to heat up in the microwave etc. No she works hard from 7am to midnight and usually without any sleep hardly, and often wished she had twice the amount of hours in the day to get things done. It's a total impossibility to be at work and yet magically also be at home doing the work there, and bring up children. Any so called mother who claims otherwise is either a liar or does the housework to slack and lazy standards and never cooks freshly prepared meals, that do not involve a microwave oven! If you analyse what is happening in todays society, you will witness people leading single lives but cohabiting to afford the mortgage. They also drink too much and stupidly claim their pregnancies were 'out of the blue' or 'I suddenly found I was pregnant!'. Yeah right....:(

So yes I agree both men and women can and should look after themselves, but most people choose the lazy options every time even if they seem to be 'looking after themselves'. The days when men were men and women were women disappeared decades ago. Also throughout nature there is no such thing as equal, because the world would be in real trouble if it was!

How on Earth do they manage that?! I have seen on most of my tins the BBE is printed on the ends of the tin and not on the label. Maybe they aren't out of date and insted just not selling well or from end of lines when a store is trying to get rid of things to fit in different stock.

Some bb dates stamps can be removed with nail varnish remover o white spirit then they can stamp new dates on. That was 10 years ago. They now probably use ink that impossible to move

I know of an industrial unit in a nearby village ,that buys out of date tinned goods by the lorry load and then re-labels them and sells on.
Could be that the goods are still in date and therefore legal but surely not legal to re-date.
Is this a dodge that other readers know about?

We have a great outlet near us that sells slightly out of date and nearly out of date food stuffs.

A lot of the canned goods are labelled 'Old Country' - a brand that I've never seen before and other jars etc in plain wrappers, I asked the shop owner if they were originally intended for export?

His answer was "No - they are bulk bought from high end retailers that do not discount their goods, the original labels are removed and they are relabelled so that they can be sold at discount"

I have bought a wide variety from this outlet - even though its past or on its sell by date - never had anything that was 'off' and its brilliant value ...e.g. three trays of 6 x chocolate minirolls, four x 6 packs of W*lkers crisps, 4 cans of soup - at a £1 a time.

We live in a area of high unemployment and this outlet does a very lively trade :)

It all depends on the quality of the original produce, how it was packed and how it was stored. A few years ago some researchers tested and tasted some pretty ancient stuff and found it in perfect order and safe. It was very carefully packed slightly over one hundred years ago but stored at below freezing temperatures.

Use by dates etc. are used to satisfy government regulations, not necessarily indicating lack of safety thereafter. That said, the food might not taste quite as good when it is old; for example there is a danger that water will be extracted from deep frozen goods over time making them hard or stringy
  • Evening all, going back to the original subject of own brand goods etcetera, during the past 20 years, I have had a number of different jobs, including working for WH Smith, Our Price, Cws, crs, Somerfield, Kwik Save, and Marks & Spencer, so a wide and varied range of retailers!

Bread - own label and Value brand bread for most of the major supermarkets is made by either Allied Bakery's or British Bakery's . This goes back to the days before shop branded bread, when the cheap brands would be either sunblest or mothers pride. The actual manufacturer will depend on what area you are in, and who is the primary supplier.

Cakes - again own brand cakes are made by leading cake manufacturers, a few years ago wise's bakery were a leading supplier, in fact one Christmas the Marks and Spencers and the Somerfields luxury mince pies were the same receipe and ingredients. In a taste test, the Somerfields was ranked the best, and the marks one was ranked 8th. They were both the same!!!

You need to always be aware, tho, that suppliers of goods can change regularly, as can ingredients, as different grocery lines regularly go out to tender. About 6 months ago, I preferred the Aldi gold blend coffee, and the sainsbury gold blend coffee (they were both the same) to the brand name alternative. In October the Aldi gold blend coffee had changed to something undrinkable, swiftly followed by the sainsbury version.

When I worked at Whs, the supplier of blank video cassettes was tdk, sometimes they Would even send tdk versions instead, and once, they sent Woolworths own brand instead of the smiths ones. The supplier changed during my time their, to 3M, manufacturer of the scotch brand.

    I hope that helps,

Also the tide has changed in the last thirty years or so, and women are now very sly and seek out men who will be their lapdogs and provide them with more than they actually deserve. You now see ungrateful lazy obese (an obese woman is not necessarily a lazy one, I am obese but have full time job and am self employed) women, that have never done a days housework or proper cooking in their lives and are shameless about it too. They also pay for everything to be done much like your father does, so it seems things women finally have morphed into sloth-like men! Women now, particularly the younger generations just dump their children on the grandparents and !!!!!! off to work, (most have to go to work to help pay the bills, long gone are the days of cheap council houses to rent)because it beats doing the real tough housework back home (would love to stay at home and JUST do housework, instead of doing that and having a job). My own mother is a housewife of the 1950s vintage (she is 73) and is under no illusion which is the hardest work (my mum is 71 and they were from the generation that dishwasher/automatic's etc were beyond their purse strings, my mum reckons we have it tougher) ! Unlike todays so called housewives, she has never had the time to sit on her backside drinking wine while waiting for the junk food to heat up in the microwave etc (working women and housewives do still cook, just try the grocery challange thread) . No she works hard from 7am to midnight and usually without any sleep hardly, and often wished she had twice the amount of hours in the day to get things done (not having enough time in a day is common through the ages) . It's a total impossibility to be at work and yet magically also be at home doing the work there, and bring up children. Any so called (I take that to mean that those of us who HAVE to work cannot claim to be a good mother) mother who claims otherwise is either a liar or does the housework to slack and lazy standards (you can't tell me that granny never skimpt on the ironing once in awhile) and never cooks freshly prepared meals, that do not involve a microwave oven! If you analyse what is happening in todays society, (yes lets analyse, women are no longer down troden drudges with little or no say, they have a voice now BECAUSE they are wage earners in their own right) you will witness people leading single lives but cohabiting to afford the mortgage. They also drink too much (Gin is not called mother's ruin for nothing, a term invented way back in the Victorian era, I believe) and stupidly claim their pregnancies were 'out of the blue' or 'I suddenly found I was pregnant!'. Yeah right....:( (if you ever try your hand at geneology you will find most people's past's are littered with illegitimate offspring)

So yes I agree both men and women can and should (no "be able to") look after themselves, but most people choose the lazy (lets not confuse laziness with convenience) options every time even if they seem to be 'looking after themselves'. The days when men were men and women were women disappeared decades ago (Ahmen to that) . Also throughout nature there is no such thing as equal, because the world would be in real trouble if it was!

:eek::eek: I am shocked and had to reply

I will agree on one point, in my experience men and women will always be unequal, not just because men cannot have children, mainly because women have adpated far quicker and more sucessfully than men. Women have the advantage of having to adapt when they do have children both emotionaly and physicaly but men will get there in the end, purely because "us" women will drag them there :D

Having known 2 people who worked for Heinz for many years I was told that Heinz do not make products for any other label or company other than their own.

It's the same with Kellogg's I'm given to understand. You can always tell the difference between their cereals & shop's own brands. They just don't compare.

I know Im quoting someone from years ago, but I have noticed that when the Heinz reduced sugar and salt range came out, so did the Asda beans, with reduced salt and sugar.

Maybe it's Asda just copying the name, but meh... Though Heinz is nutritionally better

A ship with a cargo of champagne bottles for the Russian court, was recovered from the bottom of the Baltic Sea.
The contents of the corked bottles still made an expensive drink even though it was 200 years old.

As much as I (partially) agree with you (wouldn't want to eat fish after its sell by date as even if its not poisonus I know I am ill afterwards if I do this). Alcohol is slightly different- its not really comparable to a box of something more fresh- alcohol gets better with age in many cases but most food does not. Bacteria helps wine give it its taste, bacteria can spoil plenty of foods and even cause them to become toxic.

I prefer to use the nose test myself ;)
