As sold in Tesco: Panadol extra costs £2.07. Aspar Paracetomol Extra Caplets cost 47p. Similar red packaging. Identical ingredients: 500mg paracetomol and 65mg caffeine
  • There are over 50 pages on this thread now and frankly don't have the time to read through them all but I know when I bought my Petrol Flymo lawnmower last year the instructions had Husqvarna on them which is a pretty good brand in deed.
  • a few cheap brands are all the same. like technica(tesco) and pacific(asda) freview boxes

I doubt that very much. Yeo Valley make a big thing about running their own organic dairy cooperative and there is no way they would supply a non-organic basics product. They have a very strong ethical position to protect which would be damaged hugely if they started supplying non-organic products.

Also, if they were to do this, it would be labelled "Basics Organic Natural Yoghurt" at the very least to improve the marketing position.

Without wishing to bicker. My partner was there and saw it. She could probably explain the marketing/ business reasoning better than I. But it's the same product. Same production line, same product just different packaging.

Bourjois and Chanel, blushers eyeliners and eyeshadows are also all made on the same production line, and just split off for packaging.
  • Sorry not posting info but asking questions:

    Does anyone know if:

    1. Clinique still supply skincare and make-up products to M&S?
    2. Do Douwe Egberts supply own brand coffee to supermarkets?

What makes Tesco/Asda evil and Sainsburys & others not?

I'm not necessarily agreeing or disagreeing with the above, but I can share with you one little thing. My uncle is an apple farmer (in Kent). He was pleased to get the Tesco contract, but he said they hammered him down on price much more than the other supermarkets that he spoke to. (From memory, he said they were arguing over fractions of a pence per tonne.)

It seemed a bit of a pity that a company that was making so much money (billions?) would screw someone for pennies. (Although I know that's why how they make so much money...)
If less is more, think how much "more" more would be.

Unfortunately thats the nature of capitalism, i am not saying they are good or bad, but everything needs to be seen in the whole - Tesco also offer very reasonable priced food, easily accessible to a lot of people who can't get to independants and farms etc (or cant afford to).

When the (and other supermarkets) build new stores they also put a lot of money into the community - i know this first hand, yes they will get it all back in profits etc, but if the supermarket doesnt invest in renewing a lot of our countries Market Towns when they go into them you know the Councils dont have the money to do it. Note - please do not make this a 'but they destroy the high street' debate as that is a debate that needs to be taken on a case by case basis as again, from experience i have seen them both destroy and regenerate/energise the high streets (probably more the later in recent years though due to planning consents having stipulations on them).

My Beer example from earlier was a similar position on negoitiation as the Apples, but then it also bought with it national distribution for 3 lines and regional distribution for another 4 lines - allowing much larger sales and more profit overall for the independant brewer.

It is worth pointing out that 5 year guarantees (or any guarantee for that matter) are irrelevant because consumer law states that for all items purchased "It must be as described. It must be of satisfactory quality, sufficiently durable, free from any defects"

Also, your contract is with the person you purchased the item from, not the manufacturer.

This law stands for up to 6 years after purchase in England and Wales and 5 years in Scotland.

SORRY - I CAN'T GET RID OF THE ITALICS ON THIS POST - MY POST IS FROM HERE ON.........

The above may be true, but as you say, the law stands for 'up to 6 yrs' and the term 'sufficiently durable' is open for courts to determine!
I think that if your £400 washing machine needed a new £50 timer after 4 yrs of daily use, a court would say that was not unreasonable, and did not mean that the item was not sufficiently durable.
I too am generally very sceptical of the value of extended warranties, but I have recently taken out an extended warranty at the end of the original 1 yr warranty, partly because it covers me for 'accidental mishaps' such as my children putting a sandwich into the DVD player (a cliche, I know) or, something which did actually happen recently - a label came loose from a towel and blocked the drainage pump on my washing m/c - can't blame that on the washing machine, but it's covered under my new policy.

I would be interested to hear from kazza2 how he/she has fared when arguing her case with retailers on any of her 4 yr old items?
