Air Conditioner Unit £50

  • If anyone lives near a Homebase - I bought a 9,000BTU portable AC unit yesterday for £149.99 (own brand), next cheapest I found was Wickes who charge £180 then it goes up to around £200 everywhere else for similarly rated machines.

Thoroughly recommend it (on one evenings use!)

  • Unless it's quite a small room or you live in Scotland, 9000btu aircon will not be that effective.
  • States it's good for 20 square metres on the box - more than adequate, particularly as it's being used in a bedroom - but then my house isn't as big as yours it would seem.

Just think - in 7 weeks it'll be Autumn

and 3 days it'll be back to "average temps"
  • hehe raspberry, nah, just I'm after a more powerful one, I would imagine a 8-10k unit would be fine for a bedroom especially if left on a few hours before going to bed.

Bought an air con from B &Q not long ago for £95 dont know if theyve still got them in. Was an own brand one and is pretty good.

OMG just checked online and its now priced at £199.98
  • The days of under-£100 aircons from B&Q are over for now, hopefully same might be repeated next Spring.

I researched these a bit last year and from what I gathered. A good air con unit would draw air (more specifically moisture) from outside via a vent. I have seen some industrial ones connect to the water supply. These are generally fixed items and can cost from £300 up. Portable units will blow out cold air but are not powerful enough to lower the temperature of the room. They are not bad if you stand in front of them though. More of a souped up fan.

    I have the dixons unit.

    Don't bother.

It's just too fiddly. You get three cool box ice packs. You have to freeze these, then put them in, then fill the figety tank with water. Which requires a couple of trips to the sink with a jug or bottle. Eventually the blocks melt, hen you have to remember to freeze the blocks for several hours, fill it with water, do it all over again. Ad infinitum, again and again..

Been used once/twice and never again. I'd buy two big fans for the same money.

Top tip from TV, fill a (or some) 2 litlre drink bottle with tap water, freeze it, then put it in front or behind of fan, which will then blow nice cool air around the room. Ice will melt, freeze it again. Repeat. Lot easier, and less hassle !

Mine is portable and has a temperature gauge. You set it to whatever temp you want the room and it takes the temp down to that. They do cool the room down.
