I'm going to set a budget of 300. It sound alot but it's a reduction from our old ways. It will take time to change our family's eating habits.
This a bit of a psychological thing for me. When I was a single parent I regularly fed myself and 2 kids on 30 pounds a week. Now that I am earning more, in a new marriage etc. it felt great to go to ASDA buy what I wanted and not stand at the checkout adding up the cost in my head incase I didn't have enough cash to pay. (Aldi didn't take switch then)
Now when I look at what we regularly spend on food I can't believe it! It's such a waste of money, when I could be paying off debt and getting debt free sooner.
So .. The challenge will be to spend 300 this month witha view to reducing this further each month. I will be checking OS threads for tips.:o0 -
Ok there seems to be a bit of nervousness around this thread so for inspiration I thought id let you knwo what we are having for tea and a costing.
Hollands chicken & veg pie ( 40p for 4, one each so) 20p
Mash ( morissons unwashed potatoes CHEAP, 1/3rd bag) 20p
Value Carrots 20ps worth
Frozen peas 10ps worth
Morissons own Gravy about 10ps worth
TOTAL FOR 2 80p
For the nervy among us, why not do some costings like this? Occasionally when Im feeling a bit off the wagon I go for something like this or a homemade pizza & jackets aiming to have the whole meal under a quid type thing. Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? just thinking about this some more
Would it be possible ( I think so) to do meals as follows
Different nights have meals to different values. eg 1.00 per person or 50p per person. It might be pretty interesting to see who does what with thier meal "allowances" Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? hello! I was under budget again this month! cant believe it - OH was moaning that we had NO food in tho
on for £120 again this month or less hopefully!0 -
tonight me and OH had (approx costings)
chicken drumsticks (reduced in spar tp 30p) for 6 which i put on stock and herbs and cooked in oven
I had 2 veggie lincolnshire sausages (pack of 5 i think - redcued to 90p in Asda!)
New pots with chives and a butter (not sure how much these were)
Roasted veg (peppers, red onion, courgette) and home grown cherry tomatoes
yum yum and enough left overs for lunch 2moro! as you can tell i spend a lot of time rummaging through the reduced sections!!!!0 -
Well I used to spend about £140 a week minimum which is shocking for a family of 4, I threw loads of fresh stuff out as bought too much, and lately I spent £55 12 days ago inc cleaning products etc, £7 on a few fresh things & some cleaning stuff in the middle, and today I spent £63 which included cleaning stuff, new razor for DP which was £6 and 2 packs of nappies, and toiletries. I'm in shock.
Whats helped is shopping online. £10 off with the ASDA codes. I can meal plan much easier and check what I have in before I buy and don't impulse buy. Downside is no reductions but most in shops near me aren't worth having only, they knock about 10-15% off. Only worth it when I go to Somerfields as sometimes they forget to take the 2 for offer off.
After our hols on a mission to see what I can get it down toOne day I might be more organised...........
GC: £200
Slinkies target 2018 - another 70lb off (half way to what the NHS says) so far 25lb0
