I'm in again this month. My problem is controlling my OH who has no idea about money at all. We've just had a bill in from the council for arrears for last year which we had no idea was going to land on us so everything is cut to a shoestring this month. I'm going to stick with £160 for me, OH and a fussy collie dog but that does include toiletries for me (he can buy his own fags and razorblades!) Btw, when did the grocery challenge decide to move to the DFW board? I've only been away a week!

Well just done my last shop of the month which was £11.11 tonight. But got some beef for my dinner tomorrow. Which Asda call a pot roasting joint hello slow cooker in this heat.

Granted I have bought a odd bottle of milk out of my own money. But as I have been spending my money on something else in the shop then it makes it easier then trying to use the old CC. As that is only used for household spends.

Anyway grand total of £70.71 for two adults. I do have a rabbit there food has it own budget.

But I have found the best time to go to sainsburys. Got a cucumber for 10p last night  So have been spending little and often.

And I have been taking potatoes out of the garden as wel some salad items as well.

I will keep the budget at £100 for two adults for food and another £10 for sundries like washing powder etc.

But I will try and and keep around the £70-£80 mark for food. But will try and have a biggish stock up from a butcher type place they cut there own meat on site. But it is open plan and the prices are not bad at all. That will be about £20-£30 but that will last a month or so.

Need to do a top up at Aldi as have run out of tinned ravioli is only 29p a tin and tastes as good as Heinz.

  • Can I join for August please, i have been looking at this site for a while and you all seem so friendly.Have already joined the £2.00 club. :T

I am on a DMP with the CCCS and the budget for food is £50.00, for myself and DS.

I have a full cupboard and freezer but I still overspend on food and throw loads out. I want to see if I can manage on £100.00 from the 1st to the 31st of August to include all food and cleaning products.

    Any advice welcome please.

Why not take baby steps by going to the cupboard/fridge/freezer etc and write everything down you have.

And then plan meals from that. And then and only then can you go shopping after that.

I have been spending approx £100 on food for two for the last 9 years. And even I still get it wrong. But do stock up when I can.

If you go shopping once a week try and shave off say £10 from the total each time. That makes it £40 off the month.

For people to have very low spend on food is because they plan and maybe have other sources of free food. I have veggie garden so don't need any potatoes at the moment my beans are nearly ready and I have a salad crops in as well.

If you are able to then get to know when the reduce to clear items are put out in your local supermarkets. In my local sainsburys they start at about 3pmish. And even when I go in at 6pm they have loaves of bread for 20p and 5 bagels for 30p and whole cucumbers at 10p each

So that sort of things helps me to may my money go further. I live on a estate with a one stop shop and they have very good stock control. I picked up a loaf of bread with one day left on the it for 25p and that was hovis wholemeal straight in the freezer, fruit corners for 12p.

So it does pay to take a little walk up there a couple of times a week at about 8pm. As long as I don't buy anything else :rotfl:

All the best. it will take time like anything so don't beat yourself up about it to much.

OK well the inventories didn't take long lol, there was half a bag of curly kale and some ice cubes in the freezer and half packet of wholemeal spag, a box of wetabix and a can of sweetcorn in the cupboard - literally!!!

For me, hubbie and 2 kids (and 13 rodents who need pasta and cereals for the homemade mix I make) we are spending around £300-£350 a month on average. This does include all household items, toilettres etc but we don't have ready meals (can't stand them), many treats or have food left over so I don't really know where the money goes! I think my first challenge will be to go through reciepts (they normally just go straight in the shredder) and see how they break down. I really didn't think we spent more than average until I joined here!! :o
