If for whatever reason I am not 'making progress' and someone came up behind, I'd let them past. Same if they were just hoping to overtake and perhaps strayed a little close, or because I haven't pulled over as quickly as I should have done on a dual carriageway.

However, if I judge they are tailgating me just because they are a !!!!!!, I find braking sharply to avoid hitting a 'rabbit' seems to put them off trying that trick again. :)

Most of the time I flick the mirror into night mode and ignore them - if they want to pass then they will.

Only ever done differently when my car was in limp home mode and I actually couldn't possibly go any faster (and was travelling at a good bit under the speed limit) - pulled into the left and flicked my hazard lights if there was no oncoming traffic and when it got too bad, pulled into a layby.

But if you work for a company that has the name of that company all over you van do you really think it is a good idea to drive like a moron?

I guess you do, would not want you driving anything with my company name on it (if I had a company)

the standard of driving here is just as dangerous and thoughtless as tailgaters. if you speed up on straights and slow down on bends to delibaratly annoy another driver your an !!!!!.
if you throw missiles at me or my vehicle then your an !!!!!,and expect to find out how much of an !!!!! at the next junction/tailback/traffic lights.

would it not be easier to mind your own buisness maintain your current speed and driving style and allow obviously faster vehicles to pass you? after all your not the police.

    What standards of driving?
I swerved to miss a pothole!!! Is that dangerous driving? Should I have crashed down it?
If the impatient idiot behind me was too close to see the pothole is that my fault?
HE was driving dangerously, not me.

Just for the record, I've been driving for over 35 years. Never had or caused an accident. I always let the tailgaters pass when it's safe. This particular road was fairly narrow and had bends.

My driving is neither dangerous or thoughtless. I merely enjoyed the spectacle of The Tailgater reap the fruits of HIS dangerous and thoughtless driving.

Your original post said you get wound up by tailgaters. To me thats a flaw.

what makes you any better than the tailgater if you behave like that on the roads, you are just as likely to cause an accident as he was.you were aware of the hazard you faced .i.e. the car behind being to close .He wasnt and as a result of your actions he could have lost control of his car and mounted the pavement perhaps injuring or even killing himself, his passengers or a pedestrian in the process.Would it have been so funny then.
Best way to deal with someone who is to close is carry on ,be aware of what they are doing and were they are and concentrate on the road ahead and if they are making you uncomfortable or nervous at the first available opportunity move over or pull over and let them past.
Roads are not playgrounds for you and others to wage petty wars against each other, you are no better than he.

    Behave like what?
I simply avoided a pothole & noticed his inability to do so because HE was driving dangerously.
There was nowhere to pull over. Believe me, I spend my life pulling over & letting these people pass.
As a result of MY ACTIONS cause an accident? Oh please....

Oh well, in your eyes I'm flawed.

    Are you perfect?

If you dont understand that an accident could have occurred as a result of what you did then you really should be considering some further driver training.Seriously why dont you contact your local driving school and see if they can help. Before someone gets injured or worse killed

    Spell it out to me.

I avoided a pothole. I took avoiding action, as anyone else could have done if they had been concentrating on the road ahead. I was aware of the road ahead, driving at a sensible speed. I cannot be responsible for someone behind me when negotiating a hazard ahead.

    What make that dangerous driving?

So, the OP should have speeded up to get away from the tailgater, so he could brake and indicate in plenty of time to let tailgater behind know that he was about to avoid something on the road?
