    Restore the C Drive.

Normally the D drive is your recovery partition and you don't want to erase that.

I have restored the c drive now using the f10 way. It went really smoothly thank goodness :) I'm now carefully removing the unwanted stuff, macafee etc I have turned windows firewall on and installed avast

Its going to feel weird just having a firewall in the background, it feels like there isnt much control not being able to see whats allowed and what isnt like zonealarm, it is ok to just have this isnt it? and is there anything I should know about its settings and how to allow or block something? I think its perhaps better in a way for my daughter as she often is unsure if something is ok to allow in zonealarm or not so she doesnt allow things just in case they are a virus and they constantly pop up.
I will warn her about the f10 button though to be sure not to do it accidentally. I know myself before I have forgotten the safe mode start button and pressed others instead to see if they were the correct one and I cant be the only person to do that although I've never had a vaio myself, it is only vaios that do that isnt it?

Is there anything I should do and not do now as I don't want to mess anything up again like this.

I usually install ccleaner, malwarebytes, superantispyware, spybot, quickstartup, spywareblaster and glary utilities just in case they are needed

It says in security that windows defender and avast both report that they are turned on and it could cause pc to run slow, should I leave this? I am not familiar with windows defender at all but avast and defender are different arent they defender is for spyware and avast for antivirus?

I have not put the rest on yet so will they be ok to put on?
    Thanx

Yes, simply uninstalling always leaves traces

  • Hi lady_k , there will be conflicts with having multiple real time monitors eg Spybot Teatimer and A/Virus + Defender etc they will all try to check what is happening at the same time. Make sure you change spybot / tools /resident and uncheck the resident teatimer protection. And the same for windows defender / settings / real-time protection.

I think it's overkill personally. I don't think you need all those spyware removers

You have Windows Firewall and Windows defender already on the Laptop and they are perfectly adequate to use.

I would install just Malwarebytes from that list and for Antivirus, either Avast or MSE, job done.

ccleaner and Glary Utlities are just optional extras if required if you want.

I also use the following to see if anything needs patching up.

Also don't forget to run Windows Update as there will be security updates on it.

I was just going to run this, I did remove it the other day through add remove programs and it appears gone on the surface but searching the pc it seems to have stuff left only thing is I noticed it doesnt say its for windows 7 and this is a windows 7 laptop. Should I still run it?

Also I don't use teatimer with spybot, never have done but with the windows defender as it it saying in security spyware and unwanted software protection that both avast and defender are turned on how do I disable real time resident protection for windows defender? Do you mean still have it on but not as real time protection? because I cant find how to adjust it that way just to turn on or off
    Thanx
