    Good morning Floss
After cooking and freezing there is not much left but give them away.
At least some one else can use.

We give away a lot of garden stuff. Tomato plants, runner bean plants.sunflowers, cucumber, rhubarb, blackberries.

So far we have received in return some fresh cherries. Very nice too!
The secret to success is making very small, yet constant changes.:)

Thanks Good Advice, but I and my husband try to be f&v self sufficient from our allotment produce, and want to have alternative ways to preserve them so we don't get fed up of stewed plums/plum crumble / plum jam through the winter & next year until the new season.

  • FLOSS you can make a very good chutney with plums and also you can make pickled plums to go with cold meats, very nice flavour but fiddly to do. Still if you already have the plums it's only your time you have to pay!! Recipe if you'd like it, Lyn xxx.

Just been searching through 'Frugally Well's Blog' as I was certain that she'd linked to a 'Delia Recipe' for PLUM KETCHUP.

Hope that might be of some use to you, along with other suggestions.

Probably not much help but we are currently using our bottled plums from last season (done in ordinary jam jars -they say you are not supposed to but I've been bottling tomatoes in them for over thirty years and never had any problems). We eat them with our porridge and yoghurt for breakfast - fab. jac.xx

Plum crumble, plum jam, you can also bottle plums.
  • I just watched a cookery programme where they made plum leather sweet. Looked lovely. Can't remember the name of the tv programme though, sorry.

    Plum and cinnamon oatcake

Melt together 4oz brown sugar and 8oz butter in a saucepan.
Stir in 1 teaspoonful cinnamon, 10oz plain flour, 5oz oats, 1 teaspoonful salt.
Mix well, spread half in a greased cake tin, top with one pound chopped plums, spread other half of mixture on top.
    Bake 30 minutes at 200 degrees/gas 6.

Can be eaten hot as a pudding or cold as a cake. Also works well with other fruits.

You could experiment and make a plum liqueur. Layer stoned, halved plums in a big jar with sugar then pour brandy or whisky over up to the top. Keep the jar in a cupboard, give it a gentle shake every couple of days. After four weeks taste it, if you like it, strain the liquid into sterilised bottles and serve the boozy fruit with cream as a dessert.
Serve the plum liqueur in small glasses with savoury nibbly things.
