Aren't plums a form of sugar? I thought all fruits were

technically all carbohydrates will break down to sugars Sonastin. Fruit contains fructose, a form of sugar but one that is broken down by the liver first .... before absorption. :rotfl:I know the technical stuff just didnt know what to do with 'em
Made it to mortgage free but what a muddle that became

In the event the proverbial hits the fan then co-habitees are better stashing their cash than being mortgage free !!

Dylan201 that sounds a fab idea. Thanks!! Am def trying that over the weekend. And Tessiebear you are a star as that is exactly what I've done and there is a lot of pear puree freezing at the mo which will be great for winter puds with yoghurt and granola.

And the thanks is genuine. Its the first time I've posted on this board and thanks to you I've used/stored stuff that would have gone to waste so I appreciate you :)

I hope this is in the right place, apologies if not.

I have a glut of plums this year and am thinking of ways to use them up. I've already given some away.

Can anyone recommend any good recipes for plum brandy/wine, plum jam and preserved plums. Preferably quite simple as I have 2 young children, so not a lot of time. Hopefully I can use them as Christmas presents too!!

    Thank you :)
  • Hi
I've just made Plum Jam :], cut plums in half and take out the stone, peel them if you want to [I didn't bother - too much faffle] weigh them, add the same weight in sugar, big pan, heat them up, bring to the boil and then simmer till you have reached setting point - I did this test by putting a plate in the freezer and then dropping a small amount on to it when it had all gone to mush, if it formed a skin or was setting then I put the jam into jars [steralised the jars by putting them into the oven for about 15 -20 mins on a low heat]
We got 4 1/2 jars from 1.5kg of plums and I used slightly less sugar as the plums were very ripe so quite sweet

    Hope that helps
    Helen :]

If you have a cooks thermometer setting point is when the jam mixture reaches a temperature of 105C - i had 750g of them given to me last week and in less than 30 minutes had 3 pots of lovely jam which was set beautifully the following day when cooled down

You could try a nice plum sauce, it freezes reasonably well and makes a tasty Chinese dish

Plum Jam as in Helen's post
You can also add either apple or elderberry to give different flavours :)

In my old recipe book, I also have chutney, pickle, jelly and sauce recipies.

I have oodles and oodles of home grown plumbs and they are all ready to eat now so I was hoping for some ideas on what to make with them. We are not big chutney/relish eaters but other ideas would be lovely :D
