Need to cancel or sell a holiday...need advice!!!

Hi folks
I have recently (about 10 days or so ago) booked a holiday for me and my girlfriend. 1 week in Corfu in August from Newcastle, very good deal. However, one week later we have broken up and i'm left with a booking i can't use and think i might get done for more money than i expect.
The total holiday cost (including agent discount - the agent was her best friend) is £650
I was allowed to pay an initial low deposit of £100 to reserve the holiday with and additional £160 to pay by April 6th 2010. The balance would then be due a few weeks before departure. The holiday is with Manos/Thomas Cook.
Now i'm not sure what i should do next. I have asked around to see if anyone would buy the holiday from me (they would incur costs of changing the names on the tickets) or, cancelling the holiday ASAP.
I'm just not sure what the best way of doing this would be, has anyone had this problem before?
If all i would lose is the £100 initial deposit then i can take that on the chin. But to lose another £160 or more on top of that would be disastrous!
I would just like some thoughts of others before i write my letter of cancelation just in case there is a better way of doing things or reasons to give which will see me lose as little money as possible.
Thanks in advance!

You'll lose the £100 you've paid plus the £160 due.
You'll have signed a form and left your card number with the agent to take the money on the due date.
As you say the agent was her best friend, who actually signed the booking form? If it was her then all the correspondence will go to herIt's taken me years of experience to get this cynical0 -
cancel the card0

He might have paid cash for the low deposit, in a travel agents.
Where does it say the agent was a friend? Am I missing something? lol
OP, did you book it in a store with cash or online with a card?
Whichever way, ring them and explain and ask them how you can go about cancelling which will leave you with the least to pay them.
We had a holiday booked for a fornight, then we changed it to a week ~ it cost us £170 in fees, but we saved well over a grand so it was worth it.Tank fly boss walk jam nitty gritty...0 -
basically her mate is a travel agent so i rang her to help me look for something and book it as a surprise, everything was done over the phone that same day, no signatures nothing...i dont think agents are directly allowed to deal with hols for friends or family so the consultant name on the paperwork is someone else from Thomas Cook and not her.
On the paperwork it says that if you wish to cancel, you have to do so in writing to either Thomas Cook or Manos directly and that all that would be lost is the deposit if cancelled more than 54 days before departure. so i wasn't sure if i would lose the initial deposit or the full deposit.
To make the original booking i had to give my debit card number to her friend to take the £100. Would it be an idea to cancel this card then and get a new one?0 -
Whether you cancel the card or not they will still chase you for the money you still owe them.
When you made the booking you agreed to their low deposit t&cs and no amount of card cancelling will get you out of paying what you owe them."Life is not measured by the breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away."0 -
You could alwayschange the holiday and maybe just go a weekend break somewhere? Or pay the next part of the deposit and then try to sell the holiday. Even if you took a small loss it might be better than losing ot altogethertravelover0

so you reckon pay the rest of the deposit anyway and keep the holiday on for a bit just in case i can sell it later or change it, rather than cancel and end up paying for it regardless and be left with nothing? is that right?0

Well that's what I would dotravelover0

You might aswell phone the travel agents & explain what's happened.
What have you got lose, maybe the friend will help?0 -
Might try going into one of the branches with my booking paperwork and ask someone what could be done and explain the situation to them...always worth a try, if i'm knackered anyway then i'll just pay and keep it anyway.
Obviously i'm not in a position to go back to the girl i booked it with as i'm sure i'll be told in no uncertain terms where i can stick the holiday.0
