Hi milliejo,

This earlier thread may help:

Is it worth paying more money for the brand name washing powders? I used to use the tesco value bio powder which did its job, but they changed the formula and it brought my husband out in a skin allergy. changed to the next cheapest which was a non bio liquid, and even though its fine on my husbands skin, it doesn't seem to be washing very well at all.The tesco colour liquid also brought my husband out in a terrible rash and swelling all over, and so i had to re wash everthing in the wardrobes!

My question is:I need a biological powder to get the clothes clean, I know from reading on here that it shouldn't be the bio/enzme bit that causes allergys,so, is it worth paying out for ariel or persil as they would have tested the products thoroughly for skin sensitivity, of should i just trial the other supermarket brands.:rotfl:
all help in the spirit of mse greatly appreciated. only approx 10p wash using supermarket (non value) brand compared to 27p on big brand.

shops near me - tesco, sainsbury, lidl, wilkinson!

Hello randm

I use Surf and Lenor for the majority of washes and I use Persil automatic powder for whites (and no fabric softener) and Ariel Biological powder and Lenor for grubby/stained garments. However, I don't have allergy problems (I have been allergy skin tested for enzymes) so these might not suit your husband. Your husband could be allergic to the enzyme, despite what you've read on MSE.;)

There are lots of helpful moneysaving tips for laundry care (such as using vinegar or soda crystals in your machine) on the 'Old Style' board, so I'll move your thread across.

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com.

Possibly it might be more MSE to replace your husband. :money:

i find ariel worst for dd's skin - I use sainsbury own brand non bio liquid (half rec amount) on hers and wash at 30 - gets most things out, if not a little vanish soap before the wash seems to tackle it.

• I think its really going to be a case of trial and error to find something that suits your OHs skin.

Personally, I tried the Tesco bio for a while but found I was using so much Vanish powder to get the washing clean it wasn't really any saving over a "big brand". I know I react to Daz and Surf, so now I buy Ariel Excel Gel when its half price, and find I very rarely need to use anything else. So for me this works out cheaper.

However, I then decided to try Persil small and mighty when it was on offer, and my DD got a very nasty rash, so we had to go back to Ariel.

All the brands seem to be on offer at some time or another, so its probably best to try them as they come on offer until you find one that suits you all.

I only use non-bio washing powder due to my own allergies which frustratingly is more expensive than bio. Strange though my partner comes home covered in muck, sewerage etc and non bio gets all his stuff clean.

If it is really bad though wilkinsons / home bargains sell a knock off vanish powder called oxy for 99p fpr 1kg.

The best place i found for washing powder was Sainsburys own brand and was half the price of persil.
Another is trade (open to public as well) place called usave which sold 10kg of non-bio for £5.50

I always get the M&S non bio when it's on offer. Several times a year it's on bogof. It doesn't bring us out in a rash, despite all our allergies, & clothes come out clean - even the kids really mucky trousers.
