I'm having exactly the same problem. Apparently my exchange is ADSL enabled only and BT will not allow other providers to install equipment. Please let us know if you come up a solution.

This is not correct. BT will (indeed, is required by statute to) allow any ISP to install equipment to offer LLU services. But on small rural exchanges the customer base is too small for them to justify the investment to do so.
If you give the name of your exchange further advice can be given.

Some possible alternatives: Virgin, T-Mobile, 3, Vodafone.

No LLU services available on that exchange, it's a Market 1. Howver you can do much better than BT Option 1 @ £15.99 (not sure where you got £17.99 from though).
Plusnet Value is available @£11.99. (first 3 months at £5.99) and you can use the special offer advertised in the weekly MSE email to bring that down to £4.

    Quidco cashback also available.

I don't know where I got £17.99 from either. What I hoped for was an anytime call/broadband and line rental deal....
I will look in to the Plusnet...

    Cheers

You can get Plusnet Value as part of a bundle in that case, total of £28.24 for line rental, anytime calls and broadband (1st 3 months at £22.24). Quidco cashback also available.

    OP

I'm on a market 1 exchange and use Madasafish (owned by BT and plusnet).

I've been with them for yonks and always deal direct to get a deal. Currently paying £7 per month for 5GB limit. Speed is very poor though because I'm 4 miles from exchange out in the stix.

I reckon if you contact Plusnet you will be able to broker a deal for you.

Yes you can. But why would you want to keep it?
    This may help:

Get a Googlemail account and then you can take that with you when you move ISP's.

Had the same address for over 10 years and I like it. I use the MAC mail program so never actually log on to aol site. But If I can still have the same free e-mail addresses I don't have to change anything.
