BT Monopoly

I have tried to find cheaper Broadband, but as BT own the exchange I am connected to and won't let anyone else put their equipment in there I have to pay a minimum of £17.99 a month.

This seems so unfair. All other providers tell me that they have to pay BT to provide me with a service.... No deals for me
Is there anything I can do about it?

    Move house.

It isn't a case of BT not allowing other providers to install their equipment as the regulations prevent them from doing that. There either is insufficient space or power within the exchange or more likely the other providers don't regard your exchange to be economically viable to unbundle.

Why won't BT allow anyone else to put their equipment in your exchange?

Yes, do a bit of research, there are plenty of choices, other than BT at all exchanges.

    Start at ThinkBroadband.

You can go to any provider who resells BT ADSL, at the moment I think the cheapest is Plusnet at £11.99 per month with the first 3 months at £5.99.

Thanks I will have a look at plusnet, but each time i try to sign up the bundle package is more than that which is advertised.

For example O2 offered £7.99. Best I could get £17.99 They told me that BT had not made it possible for them to install any of their gear in there. Maybe it's like quikbreaks said BT have to upgrade it first, but for now they charge other providers a fee for using their service, often more than BT charges me.

O2 only offer £7.50 (with the mobile discount) on LLU exchanges, otherwise you would get 02 Access at £17.99 (not recommended).
Check if you have any LLU options on your exchange on www.samknows.com, exchange search.
If no LLU, you have the choice of any non-LLU ISP you wish, however these will always cost more than the LLU ones-but many still copst less than BT.
Have a look at Plusnet Value, which is £11.99 on a market 1 exchange, but 1st 4 months available free, or Quidco cashback.
It's not BT's choice to offer LLU, it's the choice of the ISP's. On the smaller rural exchanges the potential customer base is not sufficient for them to recover the costs of setting up there, so these exchanges mostly remain BT Wholesale only.

If you look around enough, you can find lower prices than BT that don't use LLU. You really should check your exchange, if you're in a rural area then its unlikely it will be LLU enabled for sometime.

OP Just tell us the name of your telephone exchange, and we will have a look for you.

I'm having exactly the same problem. Apparently my exchange is ADSL enabled only and BT will not allow other providers to install equipment. Please let us know if you come up a solution.
