    Hi all :)
Valli and Gratefulforhelp - if you ever have any pearls of wisdom regarding teaching that you can pass onto me I would be truly grateful :) At the moment I support teenagers and young adults with varying special needs in our local college and I love it :) Previously I was a teaching assistant in both primary and comprehensive schools :) I have wanted to teach since I was 4! but life took a different path. I'm now a 35 - nearly 36 yr old mum of two boys aged nearly 12 and nearly 16 so I think my time has come :) I will have to do it the long way because a) I only have GCSE's and b)financially need to still be working. Any advice you may have of which path I should take would be really gratefully received and thank you both and also thankyou to sexymouse :)

Jenny I don't know where about in the country you live but here in Leeds(I'm sure it will be similar throughout the country) you can do a part time foundation degree (2years) in something education related i.e children and childhood studies, SEN, early years etc then go onto a top up degree with QTS- (I think this is part time too and is perhaps 2 more years?).

To get on an FD you usually need English and Maths at level 2 (GCSE C equivalent) and a level 3 qualification. If you haven't got the grades then you can do free I think at night school over time or do an adult test quite quickly to get on a course - you will need the GCSE to get QTS though I think??? The level 3 can often be done as a mature entry essay depending on the UNI. My friend runs the FD close to me and the TAs are sponsored by the LEAs. They attend uni from 1pm to 7pm one day a week and the assignments link into their work.

I got my QTS at 40 so it's not too late!!!

    Hope this helps
