I have a small problem at the moment with AVG.
I have it set to run at 11 a.m. every day, (although recently ,yesterday, changed it to Monday and Thursday), but for the last couple of weeks it has been running a scan more or less permanently, icon in task bar, when I right click on the icon I get a choice of "Stop all scans. Continue all scans", clicking "stop all scans" does nothing. Opening the inter face does not give me the option to stop the scan, but when the set scan runs I do have that option and it works.

The other week I did tick the option to "scan on start up if missed regular scan", but I have since, (last week), cancelled that command

How do I stop this permanent scan?

If a scan is in progress and you decide to stop it, it never stops straight away. On mine it can sometimes take 30 seconds before it actually does stop. Once you've clicked the button though, it will stop after a short while. :)

I've used McAfee site advisor (its free) to advise on the dangers of each site in a search engine. If the traffic light comes up as red, I just don't bother to look at it.

My point is that you could get infected from a site even if its not flagged red

Could be too late, even if green.

The scheduled scan will do as you say, but this unscheduled scan just starts on its own and will not give me the opportunity in the interface to stop the scan the same way as the scheduled scan,(the unscheduled scan will run for as long as the computer is on). and right clicking the icon and selecting "stop all scans" does nothing, (did you read my post?:D, it's all in there),
However , I have managed to stop it, (although I think I did this the last time but it came back), by telling the computer to restart, after restart the unscheduled scan was no more.

Whether it has any bearing or not I do not know but when I close the computer down daily, I use "hibernate" as it gives me a faster boot up, but I have been using "hibernate" for a while now and this only started happening during the last couple of weeks.

You really shouldnt as its firewall is awful. Youd be safer switching it off (iff possible) and using windows firewall instead

I have never used AVG firewall, it wasn't included in the package I had chosen. I've always used windows firewall.
On netbook, I use AVG 8.5 and zone alarm at the moment.

Click on the "quote" button bottom right of post you want to quote (like I have done to quote your post.)

You can then click the "preview" button to see the post before posting it to the thread.

    ahh

Most people use the security suite (My bad, I forgot there was an 'inbetween' version)

That said, there are FAR better ones you can pay for (Kaspersky for example)

Alternatively click the "quotes" icon on the posting - That is the * " * (double inverted commas) icon on the bottom right of each posting.

The scroll down to the end of the newest posting on the thread and click reply.

This enables you to go back to your last posting and work forward through the dozens of comments that have come in since, clicking on each one you want to quote in your response, as I have done in this example
