Read some of the PC Pro reviews... AVG 9 Free gets a fairly good press.0

I asked on this forum if there where any problems with upgrading, (as I appreciate the advice), I had a quick look at the AVG forums, but there are that many comments and it appears that version9 has now been out for a while, so the probs may have been sorted out.
I heard "the gadget guy"? on radio LBC this morning comment on a Q about AVG,(can't remember the Q), and he said "there are millions using AVG", so it can't be that bad, otherwise millions would not be using it.
Question still stands, is it safe to upgrade? Or would you not recommend it's continuation and suggest another betetr one?
There are millions using Norton and McAfee. That doesn't make them good choices. It just means that they are the most heavily marketed, or are installed by default on new systems. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
I used to have AVG 8.5 (paid version) on my desktop until december. It was suggested by AVG that I upgrade to version 9. Unfortunately I did.
It did mess up my computer, so I have uninstalled it and tried to install version 8.5 again but could not find any option for it, all were suggesting version 9. So I tried to download it again but I could not, in the middle of the installation it was saying that it could not carry on installing AVG9 because of something missing or a wrong file or something.
Then I got on the AVG forum and tried to follow their suggested remedies for the installation problems, but half way through I stopped and gave up because they suggested uninstalling some files and downloading other versions of those files, why should I change anything that was working fine before, because the new AVG9 wasn't happy with them?
I decided to give Microsoft Essentials a try, has downloaded and installed without problems, and has been running fine since.
I usually wait the last minute to upgrade any software, so I was angry at myself to have strayed from my usual habit, but I think it was because I have been using AVG for the last 9 years without problems and trusted them to release an update which would install without problems, but that wasn't to be.
Shame, I used to like AVG and would have stayed with them but unfortunately this time they messed things up.
I still got AVG 8.5 (free version) on my netbook, won't be upgrading to AVG9 before I am forced to (meaning once they stop updating version 8.5).0 -
I have a small problem at the moment with AVG.
I have it set to run at 11 a.m. every day, (although recently ,yesterday, changed it to Monday and Thursday), but for the last couple of weeks it has been running a scan more or less permanently, icon in task bar, when I right click on the icon I get a choice of "Stop all scans. Continue all scans", clicking "stop all scans" does nothing. Opening the inter face does not give me the option to stop the scan, but when the set scan runs I do have that option and it works.
The other week I did tick the option to "scan on start up if missed regular scan", but I have since, (last week), cancelled that command
How do I stop this permanent scan?Don`t steal - the Government doesn`t like the competition0 -

When you google something or whatever it checks each site to see if its infected
problem is its not very good at detecting them so youd probably get infected anyways (On the plus side, its usually only very dodgy sites that are infected, although legit ones do sometimes get hacked)
I've used McAfee site advisor (its free) to advise on the dangers of each site in a search engine. If the traffic light comes up as red, I just don't bother to look at it.There are millions using Norton and McAfee. That doesn't make them good choices. It just means that they are the most heavily marketed, or are installed by default on new systems.
That said McAfee used to scan the emails for Hotmail and I got an attachment supposedly from a friend, that gave me a virus when I unzipped it.
Fortunately AVG and my own eyes spotted that it was dodgy at about the same time.
It was in the days before Virgin took over NTL, and I have a feeling that NTL, my friend's ISP, had been compromised.
However it took me all day, including a visit to the library, to find out how to clean my PC though.0
