I've got a lead I paid £3 for in Asda home store and it works fine for my SkyHD box, only used it instead of the one Sky supplied because I got it before I had my SkyHD fitted. Didnt notice any difference between it and the Sky cable though.

Never been a fan of high price cables anyway, they are a salesmans wet dream in places like Currys etc. and generally used by snobs with more money than sense or people silly enough to be sold them by the above salesmen, I've never been able to hear or see any difference with high price cables myself.

How can it end up worse its a digital signal ;)

Bandwidth can drop to below acceptable levels, then either it doesn't turn up at all or some sort of error correctionn mode (skipping frames, funny lines across the screen) depending on your tv.

Like freeview when the recpetion is a bit dodgy really...

Then the best answer is to buy the cheap non gold plated cables then, not spend a fortune on the expensive gold plated ones.

The gold plating makes absolutely no difference, its a cosmetic thing that enables salesman to fleece people out of money.

It's just 0s and 1s whether you get an expensive or cheap one the 0 and 1 will still be the same, as for the thing falling apart, your hardly going to be fiddling about and unplugging/plugging in all the time are you? There are a whole load of articles on Google proving these expensive cables are just a con.

The other way to look at is that over the life of whatever you are connecting you could probably buy a new cheap cable every year and still not spend as much as you would on one single expensive cable.

So even if the bonding on the gold plating breaks down (never happened to any gold plated cables I've had and I can assure you they have all been cheap ones) you could just buy a new replacement.

Someone above bought a cable for 80p even if the equipment you are connecting lasts 20 years that would still only be £16

You probably wouldnt realise the bonding process is breaking down

There are also articles that have measured errors in cables that HAVNT been visible onscreen (At least obviously). Which means that theres a definite difference between when an error occurs (That the error correction system cant correct) and when the 'cliff edge' is reached (The point at which a digital cable completely fails)

  • The bottom line is as far as HDMI cables are concerned, buy cheap. Anything else is a waste of money unless a long run of cable is needed.

I get these things for cost price.

The cost price on a $150 HDMI cable?

    $2.
