I thought it may be useful to give my own personal experience. I have money with ICICI - and some with ING Direct on its 6% bonus account. My own experience has been smooth - and a substantial portion of my savings are with the bank.

The banking code issue doesn't bother me, they are an FSA registered subsiduary of a massive world bank. The compensation is the same as Barclays or HSBC and their credit rating is high.

Now the article is my official public opinion - as always everyone needs to weigh up the risk - yet I thought it may be helpful to let people know that I personally have my money there and am happy with it.

    Dear all,

I have a question. I'm an overseas student studying in the UK for the past 2 years. If I open the savings account with ICICI, what are the procedures to avoid tax deductions (as I'm not supposed to pay tax)? What kind of proof do they require?

    Thanks in advance.

They just require a completed R85 form.

Thanks. Do I request the form from the bank , or just download the form from the link you gave and post the form to the bank?

ICICI accepted my printout from the website without any problems when I needed to apply for gross interest. I doubt they would be organised enough to have their own forms.

No problems. Opened with a fiver in February, running smoothly since then (now up to 5k :j). I haven't had to take any money out yet though (save a test £1 early on).
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.
  • I have also finally bitten the bullet, and the setting up has been fine. Quite impressed.

Depends what constitutes 'access'. Does enquiring count or just transacting?

Does anyone really not look at their accounts for 180 days? If so, they are more trusting than me. ;)

I think just logging in must count, as that's all I have done in the past 6+ months.
