Has he done a factory restore (and wiped your data)?

He has loaded anothercopy of Vista and told me to download a repair programme to access my data. He said the computer keeps giving error messages and this copy may not last long. I only need time to get my data off. Then he thinks I may need a new hard drive ( although I have one in my sons old computer that he can use) I am now trying to find the best recovery software.

He should have rescued your data first (using a caddy or boot disc - which you could have done too without taking to a shop), trying the restore partition and installing another copy of vista has probably overwritten some or all of it. You could have probably got everything back if you'd waited.
