Another thing you could try first, is create a new user, and login as them

    from the cmd prompt, type

    control

add a new user, make them administrator, log off (ctrl alt del), login as new user - this is to rule out a corrupt user profile

The problem is fixable, but it might take a few attempts to get there, what do you have available to backup data, external hard drive, usb flash drive, blank dvds?

Have you got a virus scanner on the pc? which one?

If this or sfc doesn't work, then type msconfig and list the things in the startup tab, if you manage to get internet explorer working,

    cd \program files\internet explorer
    iexplore

then download hijackthis, and post the log

and also download and run malwarebytes to rule out an infection

I tried the control thing to create a new user but it kept saying windows explorer not working. So I tried the SFC thing and it did a very short scan and tried misconfig but still could not get thing to work.
I have a 2gb flash drive to back up my data and I use AVG virus scanner. Still coming up with Windows Explorer has stopped working and Blue screen

Could you be specific what error message you get when you try the following from the cmd prompt - still not clear whether you are getting an error a blue screen etc, and if it's the same error msg each time you do the following.

does control panel load up, what is the error when you launch user manager

    internet explorer

    msconfig

Firstly I remembered a few days ago I was burning some CDs for the 1st time and the disc drive came out a bit too far and I had to fiddle to get it back in. Now every time I switch on it keeps whirring like it has a disk in even if empty. Could that be it.

Just switched on and firstly it goes to Sign in screen lets me sign in then says preparing your desktop with the time thing going round, then it goes to a dark blue screen with a small box in the middle saying Windows Ezplorer has stopped working- close program. So I have go into Task Manger and entered user manager and the message is
Winbdows cannot access the specified drive path or file. You may noit have the appropriate permission to access the item.
    Internet explorer same message
msconfig It asks if I want Mormal start up, diagnostic set up or selective start up that is ticked with options of Load System services or load start up items. Which one.

I took it to a local guy today as I did not seem to be getting anywhere ( despite your lovely help) He ran the Dell Repair thing and it git quite far and then a fatal error occured. He says it is either the hard drive or an error on the memory disc. I am getting it back on Wednesday as he is closed tommorow. I will let you know what happens. By the way I am so grateful for your help as it has at least taught me to a. back my data up and B. not be afraid of my laptop. Thanks again
