throw the cd in the bin, if you can see the iso file, it's not a bootable cd, it needs to be burned as a disc image, not a file.

You might want to keep the old pc hard disk for backups, put it in a usb caddy.

Can you get to the command prompt? try

    chkdsk c: /F

I cant seem to get the disc to load. However I have run some diagnostic tests on the computer and now it lets me get to the sign on screen and then just shows timer and says preparing your desktop. It then just goes to a blank blue or black screen. It has now gone to thwe Administrator cmd exe page. I tried chkdsk c: /F as suggested and it says the type of file is ntfs. Cannot lock current drive
chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to scedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts (Y.N)

Yes I did. I have switched on again this morning and it has let me sign in and then we get to a blue screen with a box saying Window Explorer not working and a box saying Windows Search Indexer stopped working and was closed. Then no more. I tried to click on that link for the burner you sent me and every time it came up with a security alert saying it was infected. As I am using my DDS comp I dont want to take a risk.

Not sure what's going on with the website, possibly been hijacked, as my AV is also blocking it, but it worked last night, and I scanned the software with 41 virus scanners, nothing found.

Could you please remove the post you quoted with the link, to stop anyone else clicking on it.

I've replaced the link with an alternative, but you may not need it as the pc is now getting further after the chkdsk.

Try safe mode again, if that doesn't work, try normal mode, ctrl alt del, task manager, new task

    explorer.exe

    if that doesn't work

    cmd

    if that doesn't work

    rstrui

    So what do I type?

    after a reboot?

did you have any other restore points to choose from>? if so, go back a bit further in time.

if you start explorer from task manager, do you get the start menu.

What data do you need to backup

    Which operating system is it
