Apparently it is a fairly common problem. The way that seems to work is to go to the Sky website (https://www.sky.com) and login from there - the username is the one given in your letter from Sky, the password is the one you use to access the Sky website (from memory, it had to be at least 7 characters long and include at least one number?). Although they said the password is the same as the one used when you ring Sky, it isn't - at least, not in my case. Experiment a bit on their website until you know you've got the right login details, then try logging into the sky broadband portal at http://www.skybroadband.com/portal/site/skybb - apparently it's a bit "up and down", although I haven't had any problems with it.

As far as Outlook Express and other e-mail settings go, have a look at this forum posting at the skyuser forum - http://www.skyuser.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=757

Hope that helps and you get it up and running!

If not, you can set up a Yahoo! account for free, from where you can download/upload e-mails through your e-mail programme.

We are considering the Sky Broadband, we have been put off reading some of the comments but PlayerKings is working. We are only on dialup at present and not in a rush, using Mac G4 not too bothered about wireless, but do you know if there are any issues on which OS you are using and if we get an intel based Mac would that cause problems.

    Thanks

I don't know about other IP's, but Sky must support Macs as well, as they provide an alternate piece of security software for Mac users.

Since sorting out the problem with the e-mail, and turning off UPnP on the router, I've had no problems (but it has only been a few days!!)
  • I am trying to install Sky by Broadband. I am running windows media centre 2005, and have upgraded windows media player to version 11. Every time I try to install the sky program I get a message saying the program needs media player version 10 or higher to be installed in order to run. When I phoned the sky helpline they said it could be my firewall that is preventing the installation. I have tried turning this off temporarily but it made no difference. Any suggestions?

It might just not be compatible with it yet:
Sky Anytime on PC does not work with the current beta version of Windows Media Player 11, but will work with the launch version when this is released in the upcoming months. If you have the beta version you will need to reinstall Windows Media Player 10.
Sky Anytime is apparently the new name for Sky by Broadband (probably to avoid confusion with Sky Broadband internet access), and although it appears that the Media Player 11 is no longer beta, it might take a while for Sky to catch up?

I do remember, when I set mine up (many moons ago, and then decided it wasn't worth the hassle) that it did take quite a few restarts and reinstalls to get it working. HTH.

Just received an email this morning telling me that I can now order Sky broadband (had registered a couple of months ago). Am with Orange (Wanadoo) at the moment but just keen to know how quickly and what the normal line of events is before everything is up and running..

The reason I ask this is I am going on holiday for 3 weeks in the new year so want to know whether to sort it out now or wait until I get back towards the end of January. Also I noticed that Orange's terms and conditions change from the 12Dec onwards which means that after that date you have to give them 30 days notice to leave

I am therefore tempted to order the Sky broadband now and even if it isn't sorted for a couple of weeks, at least my Sky equipment will be connected and ready for use when I get back of holiday. Sorry if this all seems a bit simple......

Also I have just noticed that I need a ethernet port on my PC. Pretty sure I don't have one of these (have a 5 year old Dell Desktop). What are the options? Also want to get my wife's work laptop to be able to use the Sky broadband - is this allowable and how?

It only took a couple of weeks for me, although I think they said it's "up to" 28 days. It depends on how busy they are, and when BT get round to it. Someone will need to be in to take delivery of the router (if you're doing it yourself) or for the engineer (if you opt for them to install it).

You will need an ethernet port on your PC, but you can buy a network card very cheaply - usually around £10. For your wife's laptop, I'd buy a wireless network adaptor for it - you can physically (via wires) connect up to 4 computers to the router, I don't know what the limit is using wireless, but you shouldn't have any problems. I don't know how much they are, but it does state on the Sky website that they can sell you the relevant bits.

255ish is the maximum amount of users that any piece of network equipment can support - unless you play with many network switches, and can set the IP addresses, then you can eventually have many many computers on your network
