Several free food, and foraging threads are merged together here - you'll need to read from the beginning to catch up.

A search for free food will also bring up some handy books, though most are mentioned within these threads already.

I still hanker after a woodpigeon, but as yet no air rifle ;) The big fat things land in my garden. What a waste!
We are promised a load of cooking apples this autumn, and have had lots of blackberries and Gooseberries.
We had a couple of plum crumbles made from plums off next door's (overhanging) plum tree. There are loads around here but no one seems to eat them. Soon the time of year whe DD comes back from her dad's with mushrooms too :)

Do you live in a rural area Sarah? If so, just ask someone locally. In my village you could probably get a dozen a week as all the locals shoot pigeons for the farmers. I make jams & preserves and swap a jar for 2 pigeons as you can really only use the breasts (but make stock from the remaining carcass).

General point - it's crazy to think of all the people buying punnets of plums, blackberries etc from the supermarket when, with a little detective work, they can often be freely found. Even people who actually have fruit trees in their garden seem to leave them to the wasps & the birds. Madness

I got told that if there is overhanging fruit in your garden that you can take it off the plant but have to give it to the rightful owner! does anybody know if that is true? luckily my neighbour is nice & gives me apples :)
nothing to see here, move along...
  • Although not limited to free food, Jocasta Innes book Country Kitchen has plenty of uses for wild food. Most of my "hedgerow" recipes come from this book.

Think "farmer's wife in the 19th Century" and you'll get an idea of what the book covers.

Probably not a good time to run riot with a gun then  ;):D

Sadly, there are few licensed game dealers around, but a "posh" butcher might source wood pigeon for you. But then it wouldn't exactly be free!!

    Hi

On my blackberry picking walk today, I found a blueberry bush. I am amazed - they are now all in my pot on the side in the kitchen!!

I have never seen one before down a country lane!
