I have already in the freezer...about 4 - 5 kilos of wild damsons, About 3 kilos of blackberries. I have also received some wind fall apples that I am going to make into chutneys. There are still loads to come and I am really filling up my freezer very fast. I am actually planning to have a cookfest on my day off. Also I have harvested a lot of potatoes and runner beans from my vegetable patch in our back garden and some onions...Not bad this year for me...I think the free food I have will last me for months...I'll make some of it as a christmas presents(jams and chutneys). And oh by the way, I am now asking my workmates to bring their empty jars if they have one...:p

I have only a small free 'haul' today - 2 pears from my neighbours tree - am lucky my hubby is tall and could reach them. (don't worry my neighbour won't mind).
My mother in laws damsons have goen funny this year so no jam making for me. :o(
Did have a better 'haul' last week - my cleaner has an allotment and brought us spinach, a marrow, a jar of blackberry jam she'd made, some runner beans and soem peas - all free.
Otherwise I stick to the PYO farm down the road - not free but very cheap!

We've just taken over an allotment, which is absolutely covered with brambles. Unfortunately no blackberries, as the council have strimmed the plants down - so all we have to do is dig up the roots (horrible job, but DH is enjoying the digging, says he has lost about half a stone in weight in the week since we got the allotment!)
Anyway, the free food bit is a result of all the digging - the whole plot seems to be full of potatoes! We have eaten loads, there is a tubful in the larder, and I have given some away.

We also have been given lots of apples from people at church: 2 have an abundance of apples to give away, and one person has loads of plums! We have enjoyed stewed plums & custard, & apple crumbles - and I was given 2 more bags of apples yesterday!

In fairness, we also gave away our excess tomatoes so it all works out nicely! Someone else has chickens so occasionally we have eggs free, too!

Oh, and yesterday our lovely Filipino neighbour brought us a dish of lamb byriani, leftover from food she had made for a wedding! We had it for supper!
  • I got given the biggest courgette I have ever seen by a neighbour the other day - seriously it was HUGE!
  • Streeg, I think you may find that ,that was no courgette, that was a marrow

    So far this week:

2 chinese takeaway containers of Brambles from the yard at work (loads more just haven't had time to collect them)

1 carrier bag full of cooking apples from OH's Mother

Was offered Damsons too but wouldn't have used them so poliely refused.

We are halfway through an apple & blueberry crumble at the moment and have enough stuff to make at least 2 apple & blackberry ones.
After 4 years of heartache, 3 rounds of IVF and 1 loss :A - we are finally expecting our miracle Ki11en - May 2014 :j

And a VERY surprise miracle in March 2017!

    Hi guys

I'm new here, so please be gentle!
In the last week I've managed to get:

Free blackberries from the bushes that overhang my garden fence
Free apples (eating and cooking) from my girlfriend's dad's garden
Free courgettes grown in the garden
Free tomatoes grown in the greenhouse
Free green peppers grown in the greenhouse
Free cucumbers grown in the greenhouse
Free chillies grown in the greenhouse

Only problem is the greenhouse is really small, so you literally have to crawl in there to water it!

Oh, and the water for the garden and greenhouse was free as it was from a water butt.

My sons friend lives next door to a man who works in bakery.

Son was playing down there this morning, and came back with 2 fresh loaves! The man had given them too much to get through so they sent some up for us.
Here I go again on my own....

SOunds like a marrow. Are you in Suffolk? Ah memories of the mysterious marrow, everyone grows them but no-one eats them! The currency of my childhood, swapping marrows for other more...palatable produce LOL;):D

Had a beautiful cup of peppermint tea - from the mint growing in my front garden. It was fantastic.
