  • I am fascinated by the idea of free food, and have been reading Mr Mabey's 'Food For Free' as well as the fictional 'Children of the New Forest' by Captain Marryat, about a group of wealthy children who have to survive by foraging during the Civil War.

So, last night I picked a huge mushroom I found growing in the garden! I was a bit scared at first, so checked in Food for Free which said it was a field mushroom. Anyway I'm still alive!

  • A friend got some free crayfish at the weekend!
He just left some pots in the river overnight and when he returned they were full.
I think they were the large 'American' type which eat all of the UK ones.
I must ask him what he thought of them!

I guess you'd have to be fairly certain of the water quality?

The blackberrys here are very small & hard & most aren't ripe, I've only managed to pick half a pound, hardly worth the bother, I have a work collegue who will give me apples next week. The pickings are very sparse round here.

I asked on Freecycle if I could relieve people of their fruit, going to collect some apples from a house that is 5 minutes walk from me!

I got told that if there is overhanging fruit in your garden that you can take it off the plant but have to give it to the rightful owner! does anybody know if that is true? luckily my neighbour is nice & gives me apples :)

That is my understanding of the law - that one is entitled to trim any plantlife that overhangs your boundary - but must return it to the owner. Of course - you could get lucky and have them tell you to keep it. I wish! - nothing overhanging my garden that I would like unfortunately.

I'm now collecting plums from someone who lives in the same road as the person who is giving me apples. I love Freecycle and free food!

You gave me an idea - off to my Freecycle to see if anyone has any going spare - has to be worth a try!

  • I had to get a bigger freezer for all my free food, It's ok though as I swapped it for my smaller one. I have been given a load of damsons, now jam. I also have three carrier bags of apples from various sources waiting to be frozen. I will go and get balckberries on Friday, my day off.
