At the moment Liam9 I'm still caring for G/F. Yes she does work BUT under strict supervision...her employers have been great. I'm looking after her to make sure things are not too stressfull, watching for any signs of relapse, etc....so yes I COULD work but then I would not be caring for her....yes the signs are good for her but I still do need to look after her/make sure all is well. Liam9....if you'd ever watched someone close to you go psychotic then you would not make comments like 'everyone gets stressed just deal with it & get on with things'....in fact when I was working last year it made her worse as she had no-one to talk to (her family are abroad & she has no friends in this area).

I just knew I'd get comments like yours & Dx2's....I/we can survive financially (allbeit that things are a bit tight) but I just thought if I was eligable it'd be worth applying...that's all. Chill out a bit!
Yet she managed to hop on a plane to go stay with her parents all by herself the minute her benefits were sorted out ;)
    *SIGH*

To me and many more it seems you are looking for an EXCUSE not to work and would ues any EXCUSE not to, everyone gets stressed just deal with it and get on with things!!!!!

How you have the NERVE to post this, after the threads you have been putting on here the last week amazes me! You are choosing to 'work the magic 16 hours only' in order to claim maximum benefits (and oh lets not forget-you are saving £400 every month and have hidden £15,000 in your dad's savings as well) yet you critisise someone else for wondering whether they may qualify for DLA? You really are the biggest hypocrite I have ever come across in my life. I pity your children with the example they are getting from you.
Tomorrow is always fresh, with no mistakes in it!
  • Hi Tobruk....no I could not claim IS/IB as partner was working. the 'year' but means a whole year (that will be NEXT August) since her last episode (without going in to too much personal info her other episodes have not been full-blown psychosis...last one last August nearly resulted in hospitalisation)...she is still on meds..& yes i do get carers allowance. On the DLA form it was stressed that the condition was very variable & there could be prolonged periods of no symptoms. She's still under the care of a CPN & is still on meds. By the way, G/F is paying for the Virgin Media.

Anyway...got the info I need now so thanks all for posting. I am also looking for some part-time work-or I may work from home selling holidays (my main career so far) if I can find a suitable package that allows flexible hours. I've never said that i don't want to work.

Again...thanks for some of the more constructive posts! Logging off now as I've got the info that I need.
  • Hi DX2....yes she did manage to fly all by herself!!!! It gave me a break & a change of scene for her too.....even nutty people ( i use that term not in any way to mock mental illness) can fly & visit their parents..no law against that!!

Sorry for getting it wrong DEBTMONKEY! May I suggest that you visit your GP to at least update him/her how you are sufferring with stress. With no work, caring for your girlfriend and feeling stressed or maybe suffering with depression it would be beneficial.

As your girlfriend is receiving DLA you probably have a good idea about the form (however it has changed slightly now from 3 years ago anyway) and questions asked. If you have a copy of your girlfriend's last DLA form why not read through it before deciding to apply or not.

Why can't you work the same hours as your missus or something similar?

Does she know how much care that you make out she needs or are you just playing the role of super-hero carer that isn't really neccesary?

To be fair the OP was off work due to stress/depression between April - November. His employer wouldn't agree to flexi working in November (as he was caring for his girlfriend) and had to leave his employment. We don't know what his girlfriend's mental health illness is exactly, but she is heavily supervised (as I understand) at work. She hasn't had an 'episode' since August and is on medication - as her carer the OP was off sick at this time and her improvement may be due to the fact that as her carer the OP was able to make sure that she was taking her medication, hence her improvement. I'm sure it isn't easy caring for someone with a mental illness, especially if the carer (OP) is also unwell.

What care and mobility needs does your stress give you? If you are as stressed as you imply, I would be seriously questioning whether you are fit to care full time for your girlfriend. If you cannot prepare a meal for yourself, I assume that means that you cannot do so for her?
    Gone ... or have I?
