I am in the midlands and got really excited when i went on this site: http://www.gardenaction.co.uk/fruit_veg_diary/veg_planner.asp

If you go to the gardenaction website menu you can see it on the top of the page (not side menu) it says Weather Settings takes you to a page on which you can set for where you live and it will then bring up all pages with the info specific to your nearest town........but don't forget if the weather is hard -frosts overnight- that you will need to delay sowing anything that isn't hardy outside.

What you raised indoors needs a couple of weeks to get used to being in a colder place like a cold frame or unheated greenhouse before transplanting out to grow on.

  • o thats a bit rubbish i just lost connection after i typed a bit of a message on here.

any ways, just to let you all know that thanks to you guys i have been to b and m and brought a 4 tier greenhouse for 9.99 from there today, was also quite tempted by the water butt and composter in aldi but going to try and get a few more pennies together first. I am quite addicted already i want to buy more things like herbs and stuff so we shall see. But thanks once again cos without this group i wouldnt have even thought of going in B and m for one.

    :)

Got some great seeds from b and m last week, and the fleece is only £1 per roll, which is great. I'm amazed how many value range items there are in the different shops - Homebase had sweet dumpling winter squash for 39p. Wilko have white icycle radishes, and long beetroot for 39p too.

Kimmee - my mum grows her butternut squash in a poly tunnel. Neither of us has had any success outdoors, Midlands. Just not hot enough last year maybe?

Thanks for that hex2 - I'm in east anglia so probably the same kind of temperatures as you. Blast, I really wanted to grow some this year, thought I would plant in the middle of my flower bed as I thought maybe it didn't have enough room in the pot (tho it was a big one). I'll have to look into a small poly tunnel type thing :)
  • i know yeh its really good, i dont know if its cos im buying things this year or if everyone is going mad on growing their own stuff that im noticing more hehe either way its great

kimmee - don't let me put you off, after all we may get some sun this year! This is only my third year of growing veg in Leics. The first year my sweetcorn was lovely - last year it just didnt ripen at all because we had so little sun. If you have the seeds already I would sow them anyway. I just wouldn't part with £1.49 in B and Q for a single plant (like my DH does!) that may not produce anything. Realistically DHs plant has to produce four mature squashes to pay for itself (based on Aldi 49p per squash). Also Squash are big sprawly plants like Pumpkins. Not sure how well they cope in pots.

I was in Aldi today, and even though I have a composter and a water butt already, as soon as I saw them I made a mental note of the prices just so I could let everyone on HERE know!! :D

(ECO Composter £22.99, water butt £24.99 btw!)

I love searching B&M, wilko's, 99p shops, £1 shops and Aldi for the best deals!!

I was at Aldi yesterday, and got the set of 3 green propagators with inner modules (24 pots), with a tray and then a cover. All for £2.99 - I have filled with flower seeds to try and sort out some cheap plants for dad and I this year, rather than paying for little plants in a couple of months time.
