Lou, my cucumbers are the same :) I have a new one coming at the moment and another five growing steadily. Toms are ripening and the weather is brilliant today :)

May go out in the garden for a few hours :) enjoy the weekend!

  • Hello everyone *waves*

I hope you don't mind if I join you!

Have experimented for the first time this year and managed to grow tomatoes! Not much to you lot, I would guess, but I can't tell you how impressed I am with myself!!!:rotfl:

Got a few strawberries from 6 plants in 2 hanging baskets as well

Also managed to grow Webb's Wonderful Lettuce, but unbelievably didn't get to eat any!! A couple of plants died, gave one each to both sets of parents and the other 4 rotted whilst we were on holiday for a week! Still, I know now that I CAN grow veg, so would like to carry on...

Oh and my dad is bringing me over some mint from his garden next week for me to plant. I'm planning to put it in a pot though, as I gather it can take over the garden!

I have a very small patch of garden free at the moment, where the tomatoes were, and was wondering if there is anything I could put in now. What are you guys planting at the moment, anything?

:rotfl:If you have made someone laugh today... check your skirt isn't tucked into your knickers!!!:rotfl:
    Mrs B you're a legend.

Hooray! I went to the allotment yesterday and harvested about 10 cucumbers (given loads away!)

Do you know which variety of cucumber you planted as I want to buy some seeds for next year?
  • Just noticed one of my tomato trusses has broken off from the stem. It was being held on by a fine fibre of the stalk so I've not noticed it. SUch a shame as there were about a dozen tomatoes on that truss. Unfortunately they're not ripe and are already shrivelling :( Thought it was lack of water or something but was wondering why only that truss.

Oh well, I still have loads mroe thankfully.

Just back from Alnwick Gardens today. Got to admit gobsmacked with the size of the vegatables growing in the Root and Shoot section of the Gardens. They have pumpkins which are at least 2ft in diamater growing! Marrows that can feed a family for a week! Onions the size of a grapefruit, and more tomatoes than i could dream off! Runner beans longer than a foot!

All of which puts my veggies to shame lol!

Well worth a visit if you really want inspiration!
One thing is could see no sign of slug/snail attacks anywhere....the chap at the garden entrance did not have a clue how they maintain all the veg in such excellent condition!
  • Hi everyone, hope that your gardening is going well.
Have made a lot of summer veg soup today using mostly veg from the garden :j. I cannot believe how well things have grown, and it is definatly making a difference to the shopping bill:j. Tomatos are ripening like mad both outdoor and in the greenhouse. The only aubergine on my plants has rotted off but have found two more cucumbers growing which will bring the total for the whole season to 4! Finally one of the squash flowers has pollinated and I am the proud owner of a grape sized squash, not sure if it might be to late in the season for it to come to much. The melon is also growing steadily but the leaves on the plant have all turned yellow. Has anyone any ideas what has caused it ( I am feeding it weekly with tomato feed)
Have sown lambs lettuce and winter spring onions and lettuce which have just started sshooting. Pleased with my progress so far which is not bad for a first attempt.
I am playing all of the right notes just not necessarily in the right order :D.

Can't remember but I know it was an all female variety! That seems to help :)

  • mutley - I'll bet our smaller veg taste better :)

Hi Mrs Beaston, depending where you are in the country you might still have time to sow some Winter salads, kale, oriental veg (mizuna, japanese bunching onions). Check the seed packets or seed company websites.
