I've just bought a vegetable planter box (fabric type one) from ebay, also ordered some seeds from the seller mentioned earlier. I have sewn some more lettuce seeds (3 small trays) and today some dwarf french beans ( 4 seeds) in an empty washing tab tub. I've bought a shallowish round planter and some bamboo canes to put the peas and maybe beans in. I'm contemplating putting some at the back of the borders though. Do dwarf beans need canes?

When the planter comes I'm hoping to sew some carrots and turnips - will need to get some fine netting to cover the carrots with, I don't want the dreaded root fly!

I weeded the front garden this evening and dug it over. I took out a plant I bought last year which was quite big this year. I can't remember what its called but it grew long grey/green leafy stems with white flowers on, but looked really scruffy once they'd died. I cut the stems back but it still looked dead so I took it out. I've planted two evergreens in its place. One's called aztec something or other and the other is the one used in christmas bouquets with lots of little red berries. I'm so rubbish with plant names! If they look nice and are fairly cheap I like them!

I will have to take some pics of my plants - how do I get the pictures on here without putting a link in?

Oh - and Shelvis - you live near me!!

I have a quick question - I've read that you shouldn't plant potatoes in the same place 2 years running. I've seen an offer for 3 potato planters for £4.99 - am I right in thinking the best way would be to plant 3 different varieties of vegetables in each and then rotate them the next year - for example potatoes, carrots and swede - to prevent disease? It also said not to plant tomatoes in the same place as potatoes had been as they are of the same family - I didn't know that!

You can grow them in the same place if growing in pots or containers just use different soil/compost. It means if you are gorwingthem in the soil in your allotment or garden then not to grow them in the same place. HTH.

Thanks. If you could turn them red just by looking, mine would be scarlet by now lol. I keep checking...

Thanks. Beefsteak so far have been no different to grow than the rest. The flowers are larger and more spaced out, so I haven't had to thin anything yet, but I'm keeping an eye out. I had one that rotted off, not sure why, but the base of these are slightly different to the rest. I'm trying 7 varieties, 1 of each and that's worked for me so far, all have started to fruit at slightly different times. The first to fruit was the ferline which supposedly has some blight resistance.

And no I don't think your weird, I'm the same! This whole growing lark is very exciting, if a little worrying at times.

Ha ha, I keep looking too! Only the Gardener's Delight have any red ones on so far, so will definitely be growing those again next year. I like your idea of growing lots of different varieties. The only others we have this year are Moneymaker (lots of large toms but no ripe ones yet) and Roma (these have been a nightmare in the border since they are semi-determinate and I didn't know what that meant when I planted them (bush type)! - will stick to pots for bush toms next year).
Glad there are more of us weird peeps about :)
