Oh dear, that really made me laugh although I think you may well have a point re acid loving plants!!!
I hope the gardeners and groundsmen at Wimpole Hall weren't expected to use the pee-bale in the very cold weather we've had around these parts :eek:0 -
I've not got anything growing in the raised beds yet, but have £land fruit bushes in the small green pots and in the large black pots, carotts in one and rhubarb in t'other. I plan on growing my tomatoes in grow bags or containers gowing up the fence in the background. I nailed a piece of wood across the fence and also some trellis. We'll see how it goes, hopefully in a couple of months I will be able to post a picture of lots of lovely fruit and veg growing.Grocery Challenge for October: £135/£200

Hello again,
I bought seed potatoes today - Lady Cristl, Vivaldi and Charlottes - all now egg boxed and on the window ledge for chitting. I am very lucky that one of the local garden centres sells a very wide range of seed pots, beans, peas and onion sets loose by weight. Far more interesting and much cheaper than buying a big bag of one variety. This year though I must remember which variety is which!
My blueberries fruited a little in the first year of planting, they did much better last year right until a small boy left the fruit cage open and the pesty chickens stripped the lot.
I have got as far as rooting out the propagator, and buying some seed compost but not actually sown anything yet. I am in the midlands too so a bit early for most things. We are doing toms/peppers/cucumber/chillis/courgette/pumpkin for now, with peas beans and sweetcorn going in later.
My small boys think peeing in the compost heap is a special treat!
I see T&M have free P&P this weekend if anyone is thinking of placing an order.'If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need' Marcus Tullius Cicero0 -
Hi Everyone,
The one thing i have meant to say on this thread since it started...
ALWAYS LABEL EVERYTHING!
Last year, i had read that advice time and time again and thought "i'll remember, no problem", until i had dozens of different things sprouting, all looking the same, in the same type of pots....
Label...Label...Label ! :rotfl:2009 - Attempting to grow my own Kitchen garden.....did it!!!

Planted some seeds yesterday. I used the suggestion for cutting bottom off 2 litre milk container to scoop compost - brilliant, especially using it with the top off to fill small pots/toilet rolls. Thank you.
Also found some uses for recycling mcdonalds stuff - the little wooden stirrers - make little plant labels, and the drinks trays are great for putting potatoes in for chitting!0 -
well it was a week or two later than initially planned, but today we bought a propagator and some seed trays. I have just planted our rocket, courgette, sweet peppers and chillis. We have been robbed of our tomatoes as the seed packet was empty
on the birght side, that gives me an excuse to hit the shops again next weekend
will post a picture once something sprouts.
to those who have bought it - is this titchmarsh book any good?know thyselfNid wy'n gofyn bywyd moethus...0 -

LOL
I so have the fear with my labelling!
I have cut up marg pots to do a stick sign to put in- plant name ( eg S. onion white lisbon) the date it was planted and in tiny - how many weeks till ready approx
. Ive written on the side of the box or plastic pot what it is and what date i planted it. ( i can always scribble this out after:D)
I have the pots stood in old plates so Ive written on the plates in perm marker what it is and date planted
I have a calendar on the wall when I write what I planted and when successional sowings are due
Ive got titchmarsh & carol books with sticky post its in each relevant page
Ive got seed catalogs & gardening mags saved up there.
I was also thinking about doing a spreadsheet but I think thats taking it too far

Heya all i am a newbie to all this and decided to go and buy lots of seeds to try and grow our own veg. We already had a rhubarb plant in the garden and we got some freebie onion seeds, i really like the idea of the raised beds like in the pic by katholicos above as we dont have much room in our garden and lots of concrete. Is there anyone that know where you can get anything like that for a reasonable price?
ThanksBeen away for ages and feel like a newbie again!0
