It means the plants start to produce flowering shoots (the stalks on the lettuces get long and elongated), then no more leaves are produced.

Best thing is just to sow some more :)

I think that is what has happened to my cabbages then(savoy and red). The stalks are very long and elongated and no sign of anything resembling a cabbage.

I don't really know but it sounds like it - must admit I've never tried growing a cabbage :)

Hi zara, we started ours off in a greenhouse. Lots of people on here started things off in their houses on windowsills earlier in the year, then moved things to one of those £20 lean-to plastic greenhouses before planting out. Don't worry, yours will catch up soon enough.

Just found this thread, we're having a go at veg for pretty much the first time this year.

To the person who said they had small holes in their strawberries, it could be small slugs having a go at them, or birds. I had to cover my strawberries with a plastic cloch to keep the birds off, now the bl**dy slugs are at them as well. We've put down some beer traps (using Tesco value lager) to try and catch the slugs. I have to say the ones with the small holes, I've just sliced the damaged bit off and eaten the rest - too tasty to throw away!

We've got spuds on the go - they are just coming into flower. Are we supposed to let them flower?

The dwarf beans, beetroot and peas that I sowed on the 18th started to appear yesterday. Very quick. Today, the beans are all the way through and lots of beetroot seedlings have appeared.

The potatoes that I found in the garage and planted in poundland pop-up bags have come through as well.

I'll need to remember to feed my toms, strawberries and cucumbers tomorrow. It says on the feed that once the second truss on the toms has set to feed every 3-4 days, now is that when it starts to set or when the whole thing has? I have lots of trusses starting to form but none have fully yet. Just thought I'd check! :D

My citrus and apple trees came today (does anyone know the variety of the lemon one?) and I bought a gorgeous patio rose, but am feeling a little disheartened about the whole veg growing thing at the moment...

My potatoes have come up lovely with lots of green foiliage and flowers on my maincrop, but when I rummaged the other day in my 2nd earlies, I pulled up the tiniest marble of a potato and I'm worried they are not going to get bigger!

And today I thought I'd investigate what my garlic is doing as the greenery is starting to flop... and the one that I had a look at hasn't done anything. It's just a clove with greenery coming out of it. Am scared to look at the rest, but am a bit gutted as I'm guessing they'll be the same...

Also no flowers on strawberries or tomatoes. :(

We only aquired our garden in Feb and I know I am a beginner, but it seems like I haven't got the veg growing gift.

I am happy to have at least 6 courgette plants which are flowering and baby courgettes on the way!!

Also so shocked that my Pak chois have shot up almost 1ft in the past few days! They have almost over taken the raised bed!! Good thing is no insect damage on the lovely green leaves!
