:D sorry all, just wanted to share that I saw my first teeny baby tomato last night and have a few small green strawberries. :D

The courgette looks like it's about to flower too.

But the broccoli, rapini, psb etc all have been decimated by pigeons as I didn't net them in time :(

My sweetcorn are outside at the mo and have just started a little bit of growth, not really touched them since I got them. Don't want to risk scorching them in my mini greenhouse.

Just bit the bullet and bought some established herb plants - OH has built a brick bbq (I call it his cooking throne) on the provision it incorporates space for growing stuff...just put some herbs around it and looks cracking. I think he thinks he is going to be some kind of cooking king snipping herbs off whilst sizzling burgers and sprinkling them on :rotfl:
Ahhhh.... lemony fresh victory is mineee!!!

Seem to be having a mix of success stories and disasters, though thankfully the disasters are in the minority!

    Success Stories

Potatoes - 8 planters at various stages, some close to flowering, plus some volunteers who insist on appearing in the veg plot despite my best efforts.

Strawberries - Virtually all of the 25 plants bought in March have flowered and some fruit will be ripe in early June I think.

Runner Beans - first attempt and they are performing well snaking their way up the bamboo canes. Aphid attack has been repelled!

Carrots - the leaves are now starting to thicken out and should do well both in the plot and a 10" storage tub that developed a crack or two for drainage!

Garlic and Onions - very well developed in the patch.

Rhubarb - excellent with already two lots gathered and consumed.

Courgettes - several plants about to flower I think.

Beetroot - doing very nicely in the plot. Planting more to keep the supply up.

Leeks - appear to have taken OK in the new raised bed.

Parsnips - germinating slowly but surely.

Raspberry Canes - starting to flower but not expecting too much in their first year.

Peas - coming along nicely in their planters.

Lettuce - OK but in need of serious thinning out.

    Disasters

Basil - just won't last for me :(

Brocolli - after a promising start they appear to be shrivelling in the new plot - could they possibly not like my home made fertilizer?

Cucumbers - just seem to shrivel up after an initial growth spurt. Possible that I give them too much to drink!

Tomatoes - first batch really not progressing, second lot catching them fast but planted a good 6 weeks later.

    NOT Sure About

Chilli Peppers - seem to be OK but just a couple of long thin leaves showing.

Peppers - seedlings germinated but still just a few centimetres high.

Green Beans - just starting off now - 3 out of 8 showed.

Sounds like you have done very well indeed and have a lot going on, hopefully next year I'll have mastered this and get a bit more going on!

soul619 - wow, another great list. Don't know about your sweetcorn, but don't worry about green tops on your carrots, you can eat green bits on carrots (it's green bits on potatoes that are poisonous)

    quick 1 re spring onions

i bought these as young plants but the leaves/shoots (i dunno what to class them as, they're just straight) are all flopped over. Shouldnt they be upright and a bit firmer?

my courgette has really benefitted from the last few days outside, got 4 new leaves coming through, and what i think is the start of a flower.....
my red onion growing from bulb has got its green tip coming through.
carrots have got very leafy and tall and look v.healthy, so does our brussel sprouts, purple sprouting broc.....

Cauliflower, despite all the tubs being next to each other it would appear only one has been visited during the night by an evil snail/slug who has since disappeared...... pesky little so and so......

Soulless we only have a yard and a small dog as well.... he seem intent on tasting my young chilli plants when i put them out in the sun..... if i can just ask (and I know its off topic so i do apologise to everyone) do you find your yard is starting to smell like dog pee? He gets walked every day and does most of his business then, but obv small dog, small bladder, lots of sun, lots of water, lots of pee's.....

We're trying to get a herb planter together so something is producing some fragrance, but just wondered if anyone else had any suggestions re dog pee smell in small yards?

    Can I just ask

My courgette in the green house is really looking dire again. Crispy leaves, slightly brown.

    Is it too hot?

Cafc- re dog smell, I use Jeyes fluid :o
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.

Seems like everyones doing great :j

Ok this is how I'm getting on:

Toms: Gardeners Delights are growing like crazy though the lower leaves never recovered from whatever was wrong with them earlier. Am going to put them in their final pots at the weekend

Mini Bels: ditto with lower leaves but are really sturdy plants and will put them in final pots next week.

Beetroot: germinated outside and lots of little leaves coming through (I don't like beetroot but grown them for the leaves to add to salad)

Chillis and peppers: All growing very well in greenhouse and will put in final pots v soon.

Cucumbers: Growing very well, have started hardening off, will transfer to the mini greenhouse this weekend and put into final position beginning of June.

    Courgettes: Ditto

Radishes: Growing really well, successional planting so more to sow

French Beans: Only 1 thats germinated so will put that in with.....

Peas: Two wigwams with about 18 plants in all, first lot sowed are doing incredibly well

Salad leaves: brilliant, cut and come again on a daily basis

Onions: Don't seem to be doing much since I put them outside last week

Spring onions: don't seem to have grown much since the germinated

Rocket: Growing really well, and will sow more this weekend. Seems to have wilted today so have moved into shade.

Blueberries: Only got little bushes 2 weeks ago and they don't seem to be doing much

    Dwarf peach tree: Ditto

Tayberries: Loads of flowers so hopefully loads of fruit

Raspberry canes: Have done nothing since planted.

Potatoes: Are triffid like and are well over the top of the potato planters they were planted in. Will earth them up (again) this weekend.

Butternut squash: I had 3 seeds left over from last years Dig-In and only 1 germinated and that then died :(

Carrots: ahhhh, these are lovely! Have sown two lots and will sow more this weekend. Leaves on first lots all ferny and cute :D

Basil: sowed 2 pots and they have germinated and now have about 4 leaves per seedling.

Garlic: Planted 10 cloves and they are doing really well.

And that is it so far. I have loved growing everything from seed - got so much pleasure from it, loads of worry and forever checking the weather forecast :rotfl:. I can truly say I now have the bug and can't wait to eat all that lovely veg.

Happy gardening all on this very very lovely weekend

hi vish - I'm sure they'll grow although don't know if they'll bolt (produce flowers) before you get onions. I would plant them and use the green shoots as onions (much nicer than the bulbs anyway )

Thanks Izzwizz! What a great idea to use them as spring onions, will get them planted right away. Btw, what happens when onions bolt/flower? do they become poisonous? I've planted some spring onions from the root ends of the bunches I got from Sainsburys, got about 4 batches of new leaves on them before they produced flowers...

Dreamywings1, my strawberries (Christine) not only have flowers now, one of them has produced an xtra large red strawberry ready for picking in the weekend! ^_^
