can you buy celeriac plants at garden centres? got to admit never seen them on my visits (but i am a newbie). celeriac and parsnip mash is scrummy!

i started to add a couple of used tea bags to my watering can...hoping it can do any harm after all tea is from a plant, but hope it will add some nutrients to the water.

I don't think your strawberries will need protection, they are quite hardy. Mine were fine even after being covered in snow

its not for protection but to stop the birdies eating them!:)

Can you post a picture to describe what you mean? Courgettes won't be able to stand up (as such) on their own as they are trailing plants.

They do tend to flop (sometimes I put something to keep the stems dry) but if they are healthy plants they will be fine.

I'll post a photo in a bit, but it's cold and I've just returned indoors!

    That's the courgette

And this one is a pumpkin but you want to grow courgettes the same, short and stout

Oh dear, think I may have grown my squashes for too long in the warm. Mine are a lot taller with smaller leaves. They seem to be ok so far tho so will keep trying!
  • Thank you Misskool for that photo. I was just about to post a silly question about my courgettes then saw that yours look just like mine - so I must be doing fine!

Does anyone know why the bottom two leaves are all smooth and look nothing like all the other leaves on the courgette plant? It just looks strange to me ... but nature does odd things sometimes.

They're just the seed leaves, I think always different to the true leaves on plants.

I have SO much to do today. More seeds to sow, plants to pot up and a bit of digging hopefully. Apart from tidying the front of the house and watering a lot, I haven't got much done this last week or so. (I have a chronic illness and sometimes I'm tired/lethargic and sometimes my husband stops me from doing too much!) But going on holiday for a few days tomorrow, so need to get it all done.

My carrots and chives have started appearing and 9 out of 10 broad beans have now popped up. :j

Seeing everyones courgette pics makes me wish I liked them. :rotfl:

P.S. Chimera - I still can't believe how much you have going on! :)

Having created my first raised bed, I'm now starting to populate it.

So this is what we have on the go at present.

8 x grow bags/Tesco Bags for Life with seed potatoes all doing very well - planted a week or so apart :)

10 x raspberry canes though 2 look a little poorly compared to the others.

3 x clumps of rhubarb all coming along nicely, just having pulled a second batch of stalks.

Mint - coming along too well almost in the small border.

    In the Greenhouse -

Tomato plants x 30 at various stages but no more than 6" in height so I'm a bit disappointed.

Cucumbers, about 8 plants but not appearing to have grown much in the past couple of weeks.

Courgettes - several plants doing really well and others just recently germinated.

Peas and Runner Beans recently put into seed trays.

    Peppers germinated in the propagator.

Dwarf French Beans in containers doing very well.

Strawberry plants (25) with masses of flowers.

Chillis looking a little limp after re-potting.

    Plots 1 & 2

Garlic and shallots - grown a lot in the past 2 weeks.

Carrots - multiple leaves starting to take shape nicely now.

Beetroot - all coming along well, particularly those inside the upturned fish tank.

Lettuce - great growth and started pulling leaves at the weekend.

Spring Onions - now looking a bit thicker.

Leeks and onion seeds now shooting.

And in the new raised bed -

    Brocolli sprouting well

    Sprouts - as above!

Parsnips, but still no sign of life - I seem to have a problem with parsnips!

Leeks started in the greenhouse looking very healthy.

And plenty of space - the stawberries will go in here soon once the cold nights have passed.

Enjoy your holiday GarnetLady - sounds like you deserve a break.
  • Blueberry plants do best in pairs of two different varieties as cross pollination occurs producing a bumper harvest, but one plant will still produce fruit though! A nice deep pot is good for blueberries containing lots of organic matter and occasionally give them tomato food during the growing season. They do surprisingly well! :A

Have a fab hol garnetlady :D

    Progress -

Tomatoes - Tumbler in basket going great, pinched out first few flowers, not sure if done right thing.

Gardeners delight - 5 seeds were planted in per 9cm pot and about half have come through and doing well, about 3 inches high. Think I will put these in containers eventually.

Lots of salad coming through at different stages, soon be ready to cut!!

Chilli - appears to not be growing.

Yellow bell pepper - slow but getting bigger by the week.

Sweetcorn - not holding out hope for these haven't seem to have grown in weeks.

Chives - rubbish. Barely a germination.

    Spinach is slow but progressing.

Courgettes have slowed growth a bit, but that will give me time to consider where to finally plant them out.

Raspberry from Wilko has flowers. Not sure what to do am just leaving it be.

Strawberries seem slow but steady, lost a couple of plants so far though.

French bean - 10 days on no sign of germination.

Carrots - leaves on top are still small, I presume they are busy doing their thing below the soil!!

Figs - getting there after a rather large set of leaves somehow got knocked off!!

Calamondin - new growth is appearing.

My £2.50 b and q bay tree, well I cut that back as it was really quite bad, and still a lot of green branches so am hopeful for that.

Now for it to stop raining so I can go do a bit more!
Ahhhh.... lemony fresh victory is mineee!!!
