elantan - I've just read a post on another forum http://www.growsonyou.com/question/show/20516 and it seems the white/pale patches on the tomatoes could be caused by a fluctuation in temperature. This could be the cause of mine as they were out during the day in a very sunny part of the garden and in my conservatory at night which, although warmer than outside at night, is still pretty cold at night. I'm going to leave a heater on low at night in the conservatory just to take the chill off and hope this will help.

    How are your toms doing?

Vatic - I found my local Instore to be really reasonable for tubs & trugs. I think most of the large supermarket stores are stocking them too at around the £3 mark.

Thanks sarymclary! I ended up stopping by my local Instore (which has been renamed to poundstretcher?) today and got 4 lots of 30cm pots, they had them 2 for £2.99 and smaller ones were 2 for £1.99. Bargaintastic! :T

I got the larger ones for my courgettes/pumpkins and smaller ones for the eventual toms and chilis we'll be adopting from friends and family.

I didn't have enough time to repot my courgettes as we were looking after our niece this evening, but hopefully it'll stay nice enough for an hour or so tomorrow because my little'uns need a bigger pot in the worst kind of way!

hi kimme just gonna have a wee rea at that .... i have put mine out in the polytunnel now and they slowly seem to be recovering ... still got the white patches but they dont seem to be getting any bigger ...

i did the same thing ... put them out for a wee while through the day then in at night ... or i would leave them right at the window where the sun was shinning ...

the good thing is ... its no kinda fly or anything ... now to try and get rid of the pesky aphids ....

hows yours doing so far ?

just read that ... sounds like i should maybe bring them back in yikes

    You're very welcome :D
Mine are still looking poorly but been keeping them shaded and indoors. If it was because of the fluctuation in temp I'm not surprised that mine got it as I didn't realise that I should harden them off gradually, I just bunged them outside before work and brought them inside early eveing :o. It really still is very cold at night here so I'm going to try and keep them more at an even temp. I'm also not going to harden them off at all for another couple of weeks and then do it gradually (tho thats difficult as I have to go to work).

There's no creepy crawlies on them, and today I had to pinch out some tiny shoots that were developing so I would say that although they don't look too handsome they are still ok (well, fingers crossed!).

Certainly glad to hear that yours are recovering :D. Lets just hope that all this pampering won't be in vain

Just an advance warning that we've got frost forecast tomorrow night. I'm going to be earthing up tatties and covering everything with fleece and buying some more fleece for the rest of it.

Bring in all your tender crops, courgettes, beans etc.

Hi there please could I join, I planted loads of seeds 2 weeks ago in trays in my plastic greenhouse, cant remember which ones are which but im sure Ill find out eventually.

I know I have runner beans as these are already an inch and a half tall im soooo impressed, also planted radishes, onions, lettuces and loads of tomatoes last week, tomatos were already plants but have got some that are seeds too. Radishes and lettuce are already sprouting.

Im really looking forward to this summer gonna spend a fair amount of time out there.

Just wish I had my own place so I could build a veggie plot and have a proper garden.

    Any advice welcome

Thanks for the warning. I have bought some fleece from Poundland. Do you just rest it over the plants and put stones round the edges to keep it in place or is there some other way? (I have a raised bed and planted out my seedlings on Friday)

Hi all, I am also a newbie veg grower. Couple of questions:

Lidl have an offer on Peat free compost - and it has not had good reviews

    https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/comment/30515699#Comment_30515699

    Any other recommendations?

Secondly I planted some basil seeds in 6 different pots (10 seeds per pot as per instructions) and one pot all the seedlings have gone grey and bad! Also they have kind of stopped growing? Anyone know of anything i can do to help them?

    Thanks

PS: Also growing strawberries and tomatoes so any advice on those. I am arranging hanging baskets for strawberries and tomatoes are going to be indoors (both my neighbours have cats and the local foxes are a pain too!
