  • there was soo much more in that programme about the venues and discrimination and to be honest i dont think its great that they dont consider divorce an option because of things such as abusive relationship but what sticks in my mine is how on earth would you carry 27 stone on your hips??? awwwwww

In our local asda they usually manage it on mobility scooters, baskets stuffed with coke & jaffa cakes :rotfl:

Great prog my husband actually sat & watched it with me
We were hooked I almost wished it was a 2 hour documentary

Because there are so many misconceptions about gypsys and travellers I thought it was a well put together prog, whoever edited it did a fair job in my opinion.
It was warts and all but not sensationalised

    more like it please
"Very funny, Scotty. Now beam down my clothes."

All truth goes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Then, it is violently opposed. Finally, it is accepted as self-evident.

Enjoyed the programm, and I love the gypsy culture!

What I can't stand, however, is all the talk about discrimination from people like local government, etc...

    It's a heritage and a way of life - not a race!!
  • Poor Joan said that walking down the aisle with her father would be really special. Sadly, her dress was so wide her Pa had to walk in front of her.....

Very interesting programme, as the review in The Times said today, Cutting Edge could have delved quite a bit further!

I want to read the times article, add the link !! x

I see where you are coming from, but equally if he held that number of weddings :eek:and they were of the type and size shown on that programme, he would have made a lot of money, and surely he was insured for that type of issue, as are all wedding venues.

Yep he was insured...but insurance premiums of course go up whenever you claim.... which was many times.. So yes, he did make pretty good profits. But in the long run, it was just not sensible or viable to choose to hire out his historic manor to people who, in the main part, he could not trust OVER people who wouldn't trash his hotel......simples! :(
It was really just a basic risk measure - ie, go with the customers who pose less threat to your livelihood!!

Again, i am not stereotyping...it is simply a fact of life that in business, the sensible, prudent business will go with a safe option - yes taking risks is fine if you can afford it...... put simply - if YOU owned a listed building what would YOU have done in the same circumstances??
Baldrick, does it have to be this way? Our valued friendship ending with me cutting you up into strips and telling the prince that you walked over a very sharp cattle grid in an extremely heavy hat?
  • I fell asleep and woke when it had finished. I felt sorry for the little bridesmaids - especially the one in the yellow and black dress - she looked like a toilet roll cover that my late nan used to have in her bathroom.

Of course, but if the "ordinary" weddings did not bring in as much income as the travellers even allowing for the claims, would he have taken the same line?
  • I have met travellers and they are the same as everyone else but have better morals than most people. I found them very welcoming when I went to their home too, Very house proud and a lot cleaner then most others! Good and Bad in everyone remember! Thought the programme was good and dresses out of this world!

I grew up in the same strret as some bricks and mortar travellers. The rest of their family lived in caravans. They were very house proud and there children were extremely well behaved.
They were some of the best people i grew up with.
They told you how it was and never filled your head full of sh!te.
I think i was about 10 when their oldest daugher got married and WOW is all i can say and this is going back 18 years.
But i have been brought up surrounded by all sorts of people and have learnt never to discriminate against anyone, just because they are different, they live their lives their way i live my life my way. My life is equally as alien to them as theirs is to me.
I live not to far from the appleby horse fair they mentioned and i havent attended it yet but i would love to. There are 1000's of travellers that turn up and although they have a fighting history there is usualy very little trouble and very few arrests made despite the high police presence.

However i do think joan - didnt really understand what she was letting herself in for. I think as she felt ''old'' that she had to get a wriggle on and get married to whoever.

The dresses were fabulous, not my cup of tea, well maybe a few years ago but ive grown up a bit since then. All the attention to detail and they were fabulously made. The girl who wore the slim fitting dress was very sensible at least she could walk in hers and not shuffle along in pain and utter discomfort, but who am i to talk i wear ridiculously uncomfortable shoes because they look good, no pain no gain and all that.

Me and DF have decided to but a venue and only allow traveller weddings ;) we think theres a gap in the market, :)
:TIs thankful to those who have shared their :T
:T fortune with those less fortunate :T
:T than themselves - you know who you are!
