I think this business of cutting back on the discounts must backfire on supermarkets. I was in Asda today and the reduced sections (I think I only look from habit) had loads of bits but only reduced very marginally. People were looking but (I assume) deciding it wasn't worth it as no-one was buying. If the purpose is to clear the stuff then it's not working.

i know the sainsburys (and as far as im aware all the other stores) i last worked in there was a limit we could reduce stuff to and what was left at end of trade would be recycled,

It seems to me that the limit has been raised.

A couple of months ago I used to pick up fresh meat and fish in Morrisons for less than half price in the reductions chiller. But now I'm seeing things like "was £1.99 REDUCED to £1.79"

It only appears to be in the meat and fish departments, as the in store baked bread is still reduced to 10p per loaf. And the veg still has a good reduction on it.

My local Tescos has started marking time-expired fresh veg down, then immediately throwing them in a trolley and saying, "No, you can't have those - they are waste"! Why mark them down if they are just going to bin them.

My mate wondered if this was some sort of tax dodge? Or perhaps they are giving the food to a homeless shelter and still have to 'account' for it on their stock control. I'd be interested if anybody knows the answer.

Could it be they (the manager) is trying to keep his loss figures down. If something is on the shelf for £1, and you bin it because it is out of date, you have lost £1.

If you reduce it to 5p then bin it, you've only lost 5p. The other 95p is a "reductions cost" not a loss.

In my local branch they reduce the prices and straight away put some of the reduced items at the bottom of the trolley, instead of on the reduced items shelf. I once asked if I could have that bread and was told that it was out of date. I saw this a couple of times and wondered why they kept the value bread instead of offering it to their customers at the discounted price (was marked at 10p)

Last week I saw a member of T's staff leaving the bakery section with a basket full of 10 p loaves of bread. I just saw how he got a couple of reduced pizzas (50p each) which had been placed behind the blocks of cheese and some discounted sauces/soups at a ridiculous price that happened to be behind the packed cheese.

My theory? They discounted it and hide it so they can buy them once they finish their shift. :naughty:

Recently purchased two stew packs of veg-carrots,swede, onions, potatoes in the bags- but that gave us over 2 kgs of veg for an outlay of £1-40p, They had been marked down - When I got home opened the bags , allowed the moisture on the veg to dry off - then wrapped in newspaper put in a bag and kept in the dark for further use, Things us oldies do to save a bob !.
  • My better bargains have been from the Co-op recently. Just last week I got 8 Salmon Fillets (2 packs of 4) for £4.15 and a pack of 6 Pork Loin chops for £2.10. They seem to reduce them in the morning and by mid afternoon reduce even more. They are usually on the sell-by date so need to go straight in the freezer. I have had a few things recently from Aldi at 50% off, usually bakery items, but also the occasional meat product. Don't know what's happened at Sainsbury's but there's very rarely anything reduced these days and, if it is, it's not by much.
