It's NOT what you've got to do.

What makes a supermarket assistant more qualified to parent a child than their actual parent?
Nothing at all, that would be an absurd assertion.

What makes us follow the rules though is a strange need for employment income in order to survive.

Ah, but there IS no rule that says a child cannot carry a bag of shopping with a bottle of wine in it.

I fear the time when I will be in the position of having to prove to the authorities that I have "nothing to hide".

And judging by the growing willingness of the British citizenry to have every aspect of their lives controlled by the government, this time is fast approaching.

I, for one, do not want my children to live in a Stasi state that my generation was responsible for propagating.

Possibly not, I don't work in co-op so I can not claim to know for sure. All I do know is people like myself don't work in shops for the fun, we do it because we need the money, and so if our employer says we need to do certain things, if they are not illegal or immoral, then we usually do them. I know I'm not risking my job to pacify some of the !!!!wits on here.

How is that different from anyone else? That's pretty much the reason I go to work too. You say you're not risking your job to 'pacify some of the !!!!wits on here'. Well as the point you've been replying and referring to was the lady who allowed her son to carry her shopping bag could you explain firstly how exactly it is risking your job to see someone's son carry their shopping (refuse to use the term 'allow' as it's not something you can allow or disallow, if someone told me this after I'd purchased my items I'd ignore them and carry on because there's nothing wrong with it) and secondly why is she a !!!!wit for allowing her son to carry her shopping.

On your arguement then, when they have scouts etc packing bags for people to raise money at supermarkets does that mean that they are not allowed to pack any alcohol into anyone's bags? I have a bad back that can really cause problems lifting and carrying when it flares up, should nobody under the age of 18 be able to assist me in carrying my shopping to the car if it has a bottle of wine in there at these times? Also, my mum is a fair bit shorter than me and has been ever since I was about 13 so I often used to grab the wine off the higher shelves for her, would this also be 'illegal' as she might have let me choose the wine?

I still cannot actually belive that anyone is still disagreeing in all honesty. I really do think that people have not even bothered to read the posts and are just jumping on a bandwagon because they can see someone has mentioned the words 'unhappy' and 'ID' in the same sentence and so therefore has assumed that we are all obviously bashing checkout staff for asking for ID for alcohol. It's the ridiculous things like tomato based pasta sauce and allowing someone to carry a shopping bag that are the main things infuriating people, seriously, you can't still tell me that you would lose your job for selling a tomato based pasta sauce.? I think it would be the easiest case an employment tribunal had ever overturned!

Would love to see the outcome of a dismissal on the grounds of selling cooking sauce to a minor. I cannot wait for you to show us this "rule" that states "selling a cooking sauce requires a customer to produce ID by law".

Unless of course your not bright enough to comprehend the "guidelines" or the discretion within the rules properly, not least the comparison between the two.

In which case I pity the poor soul who approaches you with this lot................

I guess there are some members of staff who just shouldn't be working a supermarket till, in some cases doggedly saying "rules are rules" might just warrant that dismissal.

I have spent the last 15 years working in law enforcement, in both a military and a civilian environment, I like to think I have a little experience. I have to say, I am afraid of ID cards, and I have nothing to hide, indeed I am not able to hide anything, my security clearance is reviewed every 8 months this covers everything from having my finances reviewed to providing a list of my sexual partners. As I have said, I have nothing to hide and it would not be possible for me to do so and I think that ID cards are a ludicrous idea, I am law abiding, indeed I am law enforcing and I can honestly say that not one crime I have ever investigated would have been solved quicker had the guilty party had an ID card. An ID card is simply part of security theatre an item designed to make you THINK you are safer when actually you are not, it's a draconian control measure and open to so much abuse.

If your attitude is actually as per my quote then you need your head looked at.
