I am now thinking that next time I will stand up for myself and explain to daft shop assitant that i cant carry something... to be honest I was doing that very british thing of not wanting to make a fuss...
Is very hard to know what to do in a busy shop when loads of peeps behind you in a queue...

also where is this written law under 25 ( sorry dont know how the link to comment thing works)
    "Aunty C McB-Wik"
"Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Chardonnay in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO HOO, What a Ride!"

    Says who, exactly?
The person asking me? so i refuse to show them id which in turn means i cannot buy a paint scraper thus inconveniencing me or i could just show my id which takes about 30 seconds?

Then you need to ask .. who classified it ... what is their authority ... is it proportionate or appropriate ... ?
and the answer would be one of the following a) tesco
    b)head office
    c) the till
still no where near obtaining the paint scraper

'I vas only obeyink orders' went out of fashion in 1945.
maybe but by obeying orders the "stupid" person behind the till is avoiding any comeback on them.

You are not forced to carry ID by law but if you appear to be under the age of what ever the shop/pub's policy is under 30 in some places and you don't have ID it will be you that is inconvenienced.
Unfortunately the pasta sauce asked the shop assistant to ID you so they did you didn't have an acceptable form of ID in line with the shops policy.
while its stupid to be asked for ID for pasta sauce i still don't understand why people have such an issue with carrying ID.

Some quotes from people attempting to gain entry to a nightcub but not having ID
"You've ruined my night": Bring ID your night wouldn' of been ruined
"I'm Over 18": ok where is the proof?
"I have a credit card": Wow does it included your picture and date of birth.

You know that if your caught serving alcohol to a person under the age of 18 on 2 occasions within a 3 month period you can be in a whole heap of trouble.
So a licensed premises is not going to worry about a lost sale more about losing their license hence the strict and sometimes even downright stupid rules.

I would rather be inconvenienced and go elsewhere than encourage the slow drift towards national I.D. cards.
At first they will be voluntary, then compulsory, and then a criminal offence to not carry them at all times.
Come back to this thread in ten years time and prove me wrong.
Ten years ago it was unthinkable that we would have more surveilance cameras than the whole of Europe put together. Now government is starting on I.D cards.

Hang on, whose law? What law says that someone under 18 is not allowed to carry a bag containing alcohol?

None that I am aware of. We're not allowed to give it to them though, via an adult or not.
