Laptop finds all other wireless networks in street except mine!

If you start changing encryption types and passwords as suggested above. They sell leads in pound shops and supermarkets.
A dns issue wouldn't drop the ssid from the wireless network list.
True, I didn't read it fully.
Try connecting to you're network, or seeing in Network connections if it is there, if it is and won't connect try right clicking, goto wireless networks and tick use windows to configure this connection, apply and ok it.0 -

Then type this.
Ping 209.85.227.99
this is google.co.uk's IP address, see what it says.
if it gives ms for each ping it is a DNS issue for sure.
Okay, done this. It says:
Pinging ... with 32 bytes of data
then 4 reply lines
then some ping statistics
do you need more information?
Ah, it gave time=81ms in reply line 1 and 58, 59 and 77 in lines 2, 3 and 4.0 -

It's connected at the moment. It's just that I frequently have to have a massive fight with it to get it to connect.0 -
I have to go to bed or I'll never get up for work in the morning. Thanks for all your advice. I'll buy a new ethernet cable tomorrow and await ping comments once I've battled with the router to get connected.
Thanks again.0 -

I don't need any new information.
You have DNS problem. Try putting this into a web browser:
Put 209.85.227.99 after http:// and hit enter - I can't post the proper link, being a new member.
If this works then I verify the above is correct.
Try Start, start search (vista, 7) or run (2000,XP) type 'cmd', type 'ipconfig /flushdns' - if this doesn't work see below.
If the other computers using the same router work on the Internet fine then you're PC is not using the correct DNS server.
On a PC on the same network that works online, check in Control Panel - Network and Sharing, then under network, click 'view' status. See what it says under DNS server - could either be the router's IP or you're ISPs primary DNS server.
If the other computer on the network that works online is running 2000 or XP it will be network connections in Control Panel, go there then double click the connection and go to status.
If it is your ISPs primary DNS server then you are best of setting the IP on the machine with the DNS issue to a static LAN IP (in the same range as the router and other PCs on the same network) and setting the default gateway to the router's IP and DNS server's to you're ISPs primary and secondary DNS servers.
I have read all the posts in this thread properly now, so sometimes the wireless network doesn't appear in the wireless network list? does it state the signal strength when it does connect, if so what is it? are you much further from the router than the other wireless users? a weak signal would definitely cause this to occur. If it is a weak signal you could add a wireless repeater to boost the signal strength.
You have updated the wireless network card drivers so unless the card itself is faulty it shouldn't be that.0 -
You wouldn't happen to have a Belkin card that is trying to connect, coz if it is my sympathies, coz I have the same prob with mine and Belkin!0

This took me to Google.

I did this and it said I had successfully flushed my dns.

Do I need to do anything else at this point? It's hard to know as it's deciding to connect fine today. No one else is here with their laptop/netbook at the moment. When it's playing up it makes no difference where I am in relation to the router. It always states the signal strength is excellent. But I find it strange that although my laptop doesn't pick up my network, it picks up several neighbours networks.0 -
You can't do anything until it fails, when it does, plug it in with ethernet cable, and come back!!

Okay, I will be patient. Thankfully it didn't fail today as I completely forgot to pick up an ethernet cable.0
