Laptop finds all other wireless networks in street except mine!

Ahh!!, do you have other wireless devices in the house connected to it?.
To login to your router, use a PC connected to it by cable, then open a browser and enter
HTTPS://196.168.1.1
The 'S' is important, as most routers want a secure network connection.
Just a thought, try connecting via an ethernet cable and downloading 'netstumbler'. This will list every network within range, and even tell you what channel they are using.Never Knowingly Understood.

This might be a bit "techie" but this program is quite good - http://www.metageek.net/products/inssider
You can use it to find out exactly what Wi-fi networks your hardware can "see" and signal strengths. You can see if, for example, your neighbours wifi router is broadcasting on the same channel as your own, and potentially causing interference there.
Thanks but that page just scared me
If there was interference being caused, wouldn't there be a problem with everyone in my house connected to the router? My DD2 has no problem connecting with her netbook, her BF connects with his laptop, DD1's BF connects with his phone. It's just my laptop that won't play nicely.0 -
Have you tried pinging IP addresses of domain names such as google.com to see if it resolves?
If it does resolve to an IP then it is most certainly a DNS issue.
You could try setting the IP of your LAN static and setting the gateway and DNS as the router's IP address and see what happens.0 -
log back into your router and do the following -
1) Set a password
2) Change the ssid to something other than the default (but don't use the makers name, or your name, or indeed anything that can be linked to your address.
3) check which security system is in use, if WEP, then change it to WPA (or if supported WPA2)Never Knowingly Understood.

No one else is connected at the moment except me. It has decided to work now but DD2 has tried to connect to it with my laptop on and off all day and it wouldn't work.
It always works with the ethernet cable but I need to get a new one as it's worn out/broken from over use at a funny angle.0 -
If you do that, the other PC's in the house will stop working, you really need a working ethernet lead before changing anything.
Any video senders in the house?!!

I wouldn't know where to begin a pinging session

If you start changing encryption types and passwords as suggested above. They sell leads in pound shops and supermarkets.
A dns issue wouldn't drop the ssid from the wireless network list.!!

I wouldn't know where to begin a pinging session

Goto start, run - or start search if you are on Vista or W 7 then Write CMD press enter.
Then type this.
Ping 209.85.227.99
this is google.co.uk's IP address, see what it says.
if it gives ms for each ping it is a DNS issue for sure.0
