Anyone know the situation with duty free in Prague?

Buy what you want outside the airport - Tesco (yes Tesco) in Prague has great deals on whisky and rum etc and also Kotva has good deals - ciggies also dirt cheap and good value in a small tobacco shop near the Powder Tower in city centre.

At the airport the shops are much more expensive than in city itself as are the bars etc.

So my tip is buy before you get there.

Oh and if you want some good places to drink in Prague for around 20p a pint let me know ;)

    Just need some clarification!

I check my luggage in - then I go to the Duty Free - buy liquid in excess of 100ml - can I take it on the plane in the carrier bag they provide still?

When I went to the US, I checked in as usual - went to Duty Free - bought my booze - took it on the plane. Had to change planes in Chicago - wouldn't let me go through security with liquids - had to go to special part of airport and have a nice man put my booze in a box - label it and add it to the hold! So why did the Duty Free shop sell it to me - they saw my boarding pass and must have known I'd have difficulty gettting on the second plane. I had to reclaim my luggage in Chicago for it to be put on the Vegas plane, so I could have put the bottles in my case then, had I have known in advance!

Anyone had trouble like this? I sure as hell ain't going to buy booze and have it taken off me! thank you

    Hi
In practise yes, check in first, the futy free, but when travelling to America the restrictions are a lot stricter, basically out of EU, check in 1st, then duty free, but remember when bringing them bac into the Uk they need to be un your luggage,
    Hope that helps
    cheers
xx rip dad... we had our ups and downs but we’re always be family xx

They sold it to you because you are allowed to take duty free into the US and they knew the US rules - ie when you collect your luggage at the first point of entry into the US you then put your duty free into your checked luggage for the onward flight

Would you have preferred them not to sell you the duty free?

Singapore has been mentioned. If anyone else is travelling by coach in a wedding party from Singapore into Malaysia, be aware that the Malaysian Customs will slap duty onto any alcohol you are carrying. And if you don't finish it all, the Singapore Customs will do that all over again on what's left....

And coming back, you can't import plants. Had to hide the huge lemon grass I had been given inside my luggage.
  • Came back from New York at the end of June. Flew out of Newark Liberty Internation. 1.75L Bottle of Jack Daniels $30 which is around £15-£18 Pounds. Also $30 for 200 Cigarettes e.g. Lambert and Butler, Superkings and also $30 for 250g of Golden Virginia Tobacco.

Needless to say I am still drink the Jack although the Cigarettes were for my family.

Also they had what I believe to be 4 x 2Litres of Jonny Walker Red for $600. That is around £300. 2 Litre of Jonny Walker Blue was the same price but it came in a gift set.

premium makeup tends to be about 25-30% cheaper at most airports.
    Example:
    >Dior Skinflash 75ml, Purchased at the airport for £19 (Gatwick last April)
Cheapest price in town is £29, Cheapest ebay BIN price £32, most completed listings for 50ml size ended at between £15 - £19
    > Chanel sparkly lip gloss, airport just under £10, boots online £15
    > Chanel single eyeshadow airport £12, boots online £16

I used to buy Dior Skinflash and £19 is quite a lot to pay at the airport! It goes for £21 in Debenhams so I don't know which shop was trying to flog it for £29!?

The cheapest place I found to buy Dior skinflash is http://www.lapreya.com/cgi-bin/ss000001.pl?SS=dior+skinflash&PR=-1&TB=A&SHOP= It's £15.95 and free p&p.

I'e bought skinflash from Heathrow arport as well and it was still more expensive than the above. Worth shopping around on the internet first!

250g of Golden Virginia is about £11 in the Uk. $30 not really a bargain.

Could have sworn that 50g is around £8 in UK. It was deffinatly cheaper than normal.

If you are travelling through the US and changing planes you MUST put liquid (even if bought in duty free) in your case when you retrieve it to got through customs and hand it back in - if you don't they will confiscate it when you go through the security scanners.
