For anybody wanting to grow chillis or peppers outside this year, it's best to start sowing them now, either in a greenhouse or on a sunny window sill indoors as they need a long growing season.

Yes, it's worth mentioning that they germinate best at a high temperature too; between about 22C and 25C is good. Frankly, my shop-bought propagator cannot maintain those temperatures in the conservatory, so I've got mine going in the kitchen where there's an Aga.

The problem is keeping them going one they've come up. They mustn't receive a cold shock, but nor must they be kept at a high temperature in less than ideal light, or they will get leggy and possibly keel over. I'm moving mine to the kitchen windowsills and pricking-out as soon as I dare.

Any idea when I should plant my tomato seeds - I was assuming early to mid March?

Living as I do in lowland Scotland, I work on the basis that my growing season is at least two weeks behind that of southern England, which is the climate most gardening books seem to work with. If I start most things off in the propagators now they'll be ready far too early to be even thinking of hardening off and planting outside. We still get frosts in May up here. You've got to work with your own growing season.

I've only been up the allotment four times since the turn of the year, come to think of it, and once was to get a second snow shovel for the house paths. The ground has been too frozen to do anything so I've been doing maintenance work on the bed edgings and shed instead. It was milder today though so I planted some late garlic, shallots and early broad beans.
    Val.
