    I dribble and I'm proud

Most of the important things in the world have been accomplished by people who have kept on trying when there seemed to be no hope at all.

I KWYM I have to take these stupid tablets to control the pressure build up on my brain (long story - basically I'm riddles with clots in my brain and lungs but hey ho everyone has their own issues) and as soon as I take them I'm out for the count.

Ok, had a read through some money making ideas from the first page and I've thought of something. It might take a bit of time to get off the ground but let me know what you think.

My wife's parents live close by in a block of flats which are only for the over 55's. As we go there quite often I already know quitte a lot of them. I love films so I was thinking of doing a mobile dvd rental service to their flats as the closest blockbuster is a good bus trip away and a lot of the residents don't have internet for online rental.
I could visit twice a week, say Monday & Friday between 5 and 8, pop flyers through the doors and hopefully build up enough custom to make it worth my while.
I know there are a lot of other things to consider but as a starting point, what do you all think? I know no-one else does this at their flats and I used to love the mobile video man coming round when I was young.

    your thoughts please.....

Fish and mermaids sound good M&P. You are thinking quilted wall art/hangings then. Would be nice if you could embellish with blue & green beads too, maybe.

Hi, haven't got time to read all through the thread for the last day or so (!) but hope everyone's doing well :)

My challenge has gone completely awry; we need to put every penny into paying off the bank overdraft so all the Ebaying money has to go to that :( I've got some craft stuff so will attempt to continue with that but it'll be a piddlingly little amount if I get anything.

Having a horrendous time with OH and I don't know where I am with that either; how do you know what is acceptable as far as criticism goes? Not personal things but how I spend money (er, frugally, mostly) and how I discipline the kids (apparently not enough although my family think I can be too hard on them...and I was brought up pretty strictly...) anyway this doesn't need to be on this board really but it's making it hard for me to think about the 10K challenge anyway.

Anyway just wanted to say I won't have chance to dribble much for a bit, but I hope you all do great and I'll check in soon and hopefully return when I can :) Thank you all, you're wonderful xx xx xx

good idea cage.... could you incorporate a shopping servce for them??? maybe use the internet to help them with gift buying.... you charge a small fee for sorting it all out for them??? Just think aloud.....

But the DVD is a great idea.... knowing my inlaws and great nana.... the old films would be a good one to look at.....

Maybe you could use lovefilm or some such thingy rather than buying? If you drop off and collect then you can control the DVDs..... not sure if you can use lovefilm etc for that but might be worth a look.....

If I don't do the x 1.3 bit but add in a listing fee it comes out at £5.40, so I'm pretty much right. Maybe I'll split the difference and go for £6 in future LOL.

Thinking back to the pricing bit in business studies I wondered if it might help some people in their pricing strategies. Can't remember all the right terms, but basically there are several types of pricing.

The one above is costs plus markup. You work out what your product has cost you to make in time and materials and then add a mark up to make you your profit.

There's another school of thought that says you should look at what your competitors charge and use that as your basis (more or less what I suggested to Saucy when I said she should look at other notebooks on Folksy etc as a starting point).

Then there's what the market will bear. This tends to be if you have a more unique product where you basically charge as much as you can while still getting sales. Anyone here got a product where they think this is appropriate?

I'm sure there were other methods of pricing as well, but I can't think of them right now.

    HTH someone.

Paula-big hugs....take care hun and dont leave us for too long :-)

Cagne-sound like a good idea-perhaps bread and milk as well?! they could phone you with orders if they know you are coming and have run out of something? may be to difficult to organise but just an idea
  • Mambury & Cagneuk - was thinking the same thing about lovefilm, think it is £25 per month for unlimited rentals though, so maybe leave that one until you hve got enough people to justify it!

And the shopping service, would agree with that, but ot just gifts, clothes, food etc, the amount of old people I see struggling to wheels a few bags of shopping home on the bus is silly. My Mum does it for a few people, mainly the people she cleans for, not that there is a lot of cleaning, it is mainly company they are after, but she picks up a small shopping list and does it with hers once a week.

Also prescriptions, although I don't know if there any rules for that, but she does that as well (she does part time work at the doctors, so she combines). Not that she has a set rate, she does it to be nice mainly, she hates asking for money, but she is always paid at least £5 as a thankyou.

  • Dragonflies and sparkly zebra print, got it!

If anyone has any other ideas, please let me know! I appreciate the ideas, so I'm not just making things I'd buy, lol!

(Notebook heaven will soon be mine...)

Maybe just thinking about your target market would help you. And sometimes simple is good too, because I do like the one in the pic but its probably a bit too busy for my tastes (trying to be constructive, not judgemental!), so I guess a variety is good. I think the gems are awesome!

Am I getting this right though, is the perspex the layer with the gems on and underneath is a layer of the floral paper?

And if you are looking to work with fuzzy stuff like the leopard (?) stuff someone suggested could you just glue it on top of the perspex which would be good and strong? There are some awesome craft glues out there.

Another idea for notebooks is some people lurve the odd motivational quote etc. Not sure whether those would be copy righted? Or you could aim to make a "babys first years" notebook or "wedding memories" notebook or something perhaps. Or maybe a recipe inspired notebook? That would be cool. Mmmm could you make one with recycled paper perhaps? Some people are really into that...and it is different to bought ones. Could you make a notebook that could double as a photo album if you put in special photo paper?

You could make an address book notebook, or a birthdays list notebook, or an artists sketch notebook, a writing themed notebook (think lots of cauligraphy writing or something or just paper with lots of different fonts?).

Could you maybe follow themes of popular culture? Sort of like twilight has been huge lately, so a black with apples notebook would probably appeal to a lot of people? Things like butterflys/ fairys always have their markets too lol. Or you could just have sort of main colours, because sometimes shopping for others I am looking for something that is cool and different and purple (for example) as that is one of best friends fave colours!

Okay, will shut up now. Am busy proofreading my writing FINALLY lol ... hope some of that fluff helps you ... :o
