I've only had my hand luggage weighed once, on a very full ski flight. Maybe it was the weight of all those boots :)
We were under but the staff were making those who were over take stuff out and put it in their hold luggage.
I do get annoyed by the size of some of the 'hand' luggage - and getting held up in the aisle while they try to squeeze it in the overhead lockers when it's pretty obvious it ain't gonna fit!
If swimming is good for your figure, can someone please explain whales?

I had mine weighed when I flew MAN-DXB-DAR with Emirates. My hold luggage was 4kg over the allowance and she made it very clear I couldn't put that in my hand luggage as that was 7kg already!! I never got charged though.

This would mean your hold luggage was 34kg which is too much for one case (Health and Safety laws). Emirates would (should) charge you for a second hold case so you're very lucky to have got away with it. Can you confirm if I understood you correctly?

i didnt get my carry on bag weighed when i flew from gatwick to sanford last year (monarch), but on the way back they did, and i got hit with an £87 charge for it being overweight.

next time i go, i'm taking one change of clothes with me, and buying stuff out there. if the bag is too heavy when i'm packing it (digital luggage scales can be bought from dealextreme.com quite cheaply) then i'm leaving stuff there. theres no way i'm getting hit for charges again this time.

the worst thing was, we had a bit of cash left over, so we upgraded to seats with extra leg room on the way back. it wasnt until after we'd paid that we got hit for the extra baggage fees! :(

Well, I now have the answer to my own question. I've just flown back from the USA after getting caught up in the delays c/o the volcanic eruption. I only got back as quickly as I did because I lived at the airport waiting on standby. Anyway, my flight was due to take off at 6.40, I was told I had a seat at 5.30. Cutting it a bit fine. Virgin Atlantic still managed to weigh everyones's cases (checkin AND cabin). The ground staff made a big issue about my carry-on being overweight and made me redistribute the weight. Overweight to the tune of one small box of candy and a shoe. I couldn't believe that they would be this petty, particularly after all the chaos caused by the volcano.

So there you go. Virgin is scraping back to the bone. Oh, I'd like to mention that in the midst of the chaos, with 1000s of passengers stranded here, there and everywhere, Virgin was still trying to bleed customers dry by offering "extra leg room" upgrades for $50 extra.

Will never, ever, ever fly Virgin again. Parasites.

Poundland were selling them last year for (you've guessed it) £1.

    None around now though.

Remember that while many will complain about this as a money-spinner, it is also an important issue for the airline to know how much luggage is coming on board. Airlines such as FlyBe who use small turboprop (i.e. non jet) aircraft impose tighter hand luggage limits and assign seats to ensure that their planes are weight balanced for maximum efficiency and take-off / landing handling. Earlier this week two rather large gentleman boarded my BE flight from Glasgow and sat down at the first available seats. The purser did an excellent job of politely asking them to take the seats allocated to them on their boarding pass, without drawing attention to the imbalance their collective weight might have had on the plane :D

The weight of someone's luggage must have far less of an impact on the balance of the aircraft than the weight of the individual. I think they should have a personal weight allowance, which includes the weight of the person as well as the weight of their luggage. Then all of these people who are forced to pay full fare for their 3 year old can manage to take all of the things they need without having to pay extra charges, while the lardy bloke who is paying the same airfare will have to pay extra if he wants to take his kitchen sink with him.
