Emirates also weigh your hand luggage with the limit around 7-8 kg. I was also asked to remove the extra Ks.

What type of stuff should i put in hand luggage, camera, netbook ect...or are they likely to be safe in my main luggage? Ive never taken cameras or computers away before, but now all the kids will want their ds's and psp's.(can these be used on planes?)
Both my suitcases came with combination locks, I suppose i shouldnt use them now reading this.
A few years back we went with JML to turkey and they weighed our hand luggage, luckily there were 4 of us and the kids had nothing so we were fine.0 -
All valuables should go in your hand luggage. It will state on your travel insurance that they are not covered if they are put in the hold.
Yes they can use DS's and PSS's on the plane provided the seat belts signs are switched off and not during take off and landing.0 -
10 days ago leaving Gatwick with Ryanair, no-one was checking hand luggage. The size of some peoples luggage was huge!
Although leaving Alicante to come home, they were weighing those bags that looked huge and were pulling people aside and refusing to take the bags. They seemed to let through the larger bags but were under the weight allowance but those larger bags over the allowance were coming off.0 -

This tells you what you can put in your hand luggage:

As Luci says, NEVER put valuables in your HOLD luggage.
Re the locks - I always lock my cases.
I think when travelling to USA you may need to do something different - read Tojo Ralph's post for more info on this.0 -
Had mine weight from Edinburgh to Frankfurt, but they have some scales there that cost 50p or something like that. Had to remove my jacket and wear it and it was fine.4 Stones and 0 pounds or 25.4kg lighter :j0

Monarch were weighing hand luggage last September at both Gatwick and Malaga, I've also had hand luggage weighed in the past year by Aer Lingus and Ryan air.
Monarch particularly though were causing chaos at Malaga by making passengers check in hand luggage and paying excess baggage fees, there were lots of loud arguments and shouting going on and some people were claiming to have had to pay upwards of 100 euros which means they must have been trying to carry on tons of stuff surely?I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. I agree, I think Monarch are getting pretty keen about hold/hand luggage weights.
To be honest, I don't have a lot of sympathy with people who pack far too much stuff and then complain when they are charged excess.
Solution:
buy some luggage scales0 -
Only ever had my hand luggage weighed once in what is probably 100 flights by now, and that was by Thomas Cook in Cyprus. It was overweight, but she just shrugged lolStarting Debt: ~£20,000 01/01/2009. DFD: 20/11/2009 :j
