I used to fly a couple of times a week with both full service and budget airlines.

I have had hand baggage weighed and checked for size, and I have also gone through with "stupidly" overweight and over size hand luggage and no one has batted an eyelid.

I once managed to get a full blade server onto an Easyjet flight to Amsterdam as hand baggage and it spent the whole flight on the free seat next to me with a seatbelt on!

I flew out to do an emegency server rebuild overnight and when I got on the plane back the next morning carrying the same size broken server they were having none of it...they took it off me as I boarded with the old story of "it will go in the fragile" area of the hold, and when I collected it off the baggage belt back in London it was a collection of wires and small shards of plastic wrapped in a plastic bag!!

Luckily it was a write off anyway as it has blown up in situ, I was only bringing it back to dispose of.

So I guess the answer is - it depends....

Quite often have hand luggage weighed, they usually want it on the scales after checking the hold luggage.

I've heard you can buy TSA keys on eBay...
  • Flying to Japan and back Virgin only seem to bother weighing your carry-on bags if they look really heavy. In fact coming back I have taken on two bags at now extra cost before. They let me put a small second bag that was strapped to my suitcase in the hold once too. My suitcase has been a little over the limit a couple of times too, again no problem.

It seems to depend on the staff as much as anything, although I suspect that in the last year Virgin have been pressuring them to be a bit stricter due to high fuel costs and lower passenger numbers.

Just stuff those gold bars in your pockets and no-one will notice :)

We never use locks (if you do they'll cut them off and poss damage your luggage they did to us) we now use cable ties. We put a few spares and a small pair of nail scissors in the un locked front pouch of the suitcase to gain access when we get to hotel. We then put the ties through the zips. If security want in they just cut with scissors and if not it is enough of a deterent to stop nosey theives. If someone wants to raid your luggage they will just slice through it. I was told about the cable ties by a security officer at alarge airport. HTH x x x

We do this too. Ultimately if someone wants to break into our case they're going to - there's little that will stop them if they are determined. But the cable ties work to secure the bag reasonably well, and it's very obvious at the other end if it's been opened - we have a bunch of different coloured zip ties we use. we started using them after something was stolen out of our luggage - but by the time we got home and realised, it was outside of the 4-hour window we had to make the claim for it to be valid. Now we can see immediately if the zip ties are still there and if not, we know to check (we know not to put anything we'd be that worried about in our checked luggage in the first place now).

As for having hand luggage weighed - usually not, but we have on occasion. We only fly scheduled airlines (from my reading charters are much more likely to be strict about this). The best was a flight to Melbourne. We were in the check-in queue behind a little old lady who had her carry on weighed and was 4kg over the limit. The check-in clerk explained the situation and that the lady needed to move some items to her checked luggage and of course the little dear was throwing a bit of a hissy fit, huffing and stomping and making a bit of a scene, but the check-in clerk kept calm and eventually it got sorted...during the exchange and delay she occasionally looked up at us with an 'I'm sorry for the inconvenience' kind of look to which we responded by making suitably sympathetic faces at her plight.

And when MY bag was 4kg over, and I said I would move some stuff to our checked bags she waived me off and on my way. :)
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?

I had mine weighed when flying long haul, but my last flight was with Easyjet and thankfully there was no weight restriction on hand luggage (just size restrictions) so I put all my heavy drugs haul in that.

To be honest, I don't have a lot of sympathy with people who pack far too much stuff and then complain when they are charged excess.

    Solution:
    buy some luggage scales

Dead right. Would the same people ask the butcher to let them off with an extra 3kg of fillet steak without paying for it? Would they then be abusive to the butcher when he politely declined?

The behaviour of some passengers in respect of overweight luggage at check in or at the gate is sometimes nothing short of scandalous.

  • Handling staff at Prestwick Airport (PIK) regularly check the weight and dimensions of hand luggage as people pass through the gate. I believe in these instances the airport operators are incentivised by Ryanair (perhaps they keep more of the charges) if they generate revenue by enforcing the carry-on weight restrictions.

Remember that while many will complain about this as a money-spinner, it is also an important issue for the airline to know how much luggage is coming on board. Airlines such as FlyBe who use small turboprop (i.e. non jet) aircraft impose tighter hand luggage limits and assign seats to ensure that their planes are weight balanced for maximum efficiency and take-off / landing handling. Earlier this week two rather large gentleman boarded my BE flight from Glasgow and sat down at the first available seats. The purser did an excellent job of politely asking them to take the seats allocated to them on their boarding pass, without drawing attention to the imbalance their collective weight might have had on the plane :D

I had mine weighed when I flew MAN-DXB-DAR with Emirates. My hold luggage was 4kg over the allowance and she made it very clear I couldn't put that in my hand luggage as that was 7kg already!! I never got charged though.

In all the times i have taken flights I have found those within the US to have the people with suitcases as hold luggage! I mean I kno they supersize everything but really!!

The last few times I have flown (last time was with monarch) I have had my carry on bags weighed. Always well under. BUT it does amaze me at the size of the bags & cases some pople have as hand luggage. I swear I have seem people carry bigger cases on to the plane, than I have checked in!!:rotfl:
