    Didn't you say in last thread that you were getting 2 new h/drives as well for £70?
  • Browntoa's suggestion to use Ubuntu, may work / may be useless for the operations you wanted to perform - I've no idea !

    Hirens however will do all you need it to, at that point in time you only wanted to remove / rename SPTD.SYS.

    Your needs clearly escalated to ' getting off your important stuff ' Hirens will do that.

    Now [ using both your USB sticks ] you need to ' get off your important stuff ' and do a clean install, Hirens will do that.

    The only issue's you have are :

    - are you technically able to build a USB bootable Hirens, and ;
    - will your CD / DVD work [ it uses the old ' oakcdrom ' driver ] in DOS, because ;
    - if Hirens will see the CD / DVD in DOS and copy from it to USB I see no reason
    why a clean Windows install from CD / DVD won't work, but ;
    - only if you have a copy of windows and an appropriate serial number.

    NOTE aliEnRIK's suggestion someone on this forum within a couple of miles from you must have a scrap HDD you can use, or better still do the whole thing for you it's only 20 minutes work start to finish.

    Are you sure the place you took it to formatted your HDD and did a clean install?
    They said they had, and it looked like it when I booted it up when I got it home.

    ddoris - The HDD were already mine. I just wanted them installing and setting up (and they've done that badly as well). One's OK, but if I put power to the other, I lose the DVD drive.

    Nice(!)
    I didn't realise that I stored passwords on here.
    Everything I use always asks me for my password whenever I do anything (banking, e-mails, etc)

    Looks like I'll phoning them tomorrow with some fairly specific instructions.
    And I'll want some of my £70 back!

    ::edit::
    Still can't install printer/webcam software, discs till being classed as blank (and after I was assured everything was OK by the 12 year old in the shop)

    If you always have to type then in then you should be fine
    That said it sure looks to me like they tried

    Personally id change the major passwords just to be sure (Paypal, ebay, banking, anything to do with money)

    Haven't tried to write with it, but it won't read the discs for the printer software or webcam software. I can drop the disc(s) in the drive but if I explore it, there's no files on there.

    Does the dvd drive read other discs? Can you disconnect the ide cable as well from the unpowered h/d - does that make a difference to dvd?

    Did I mention the bloke(?) in the shop looked about 12?
    I'll be taking it back this week with various printouts from here (I can do those at work) and won't be leaving until it's sorted.
    I think I'll take my XP disc and tell them to use that and then tell them to install all the updates (my disc is SP2).
    And I'm not paying for anything else, either!
