    Cool. What are you growing? My advice is to do it by weight of numbers. Plant loads of stuff - something's bound to work. ;)

    lol, i like your philosophy. We're starting simple because there's a chance we could be moving house later in the year. Our list currently includes

    *courgettes
    *rocket (we like salad :D)
    * tomatoes
    *chillis
    * sweet peppers

    I've got itchy fingers to add more to the list - i'm tempted by beetroot or something 'rooty'. We plan on sowing next weekend. On the lookout for some suitable containers this week so we can take our hard work with us if we do move.

  • Love the photos mrbadexample, will be following this thread and joining in where possible. I have been growing fruit & veg for a few years in the garden and in December managed to get my 1st Allotment, I'm over the moon about it as you can never have enough space once you have the greenfinger bug. I still consider myself to be a "newbie" to growing your own as I'm always learning new things and picking up tips from others.

    Last year I grew carrots in an old and unused bin and they were perfect, my first success after trying and failing to grow them in the ground. We had them with our Xmas Dinner and they were delicious, like nothing I've ever tasted before so will definitely be doing that again this year.

    Have planted a few rows of Onions on the Allotment and have some Chilli, pepper, aubergine and mini pepper seeds in trays on indoors windowsills. Also have some Sweet pea seeds in trays in the Greenhouse, my Greenhouse is unheated, we live just outside London so I'm hoping they will be ok in there.

    Can't wait for March/warmer weather when I can get all my other seeds sown - have quite a list as now I have the Allotment I've got carried away this year with the seed buying.:o

    Anyway, enough waffle from me for now - glad I found your thread as I find other peoples tips/photos etc a great motivator.;)

    Roll on the Spring.:D

    I think it flowered last year - at least it grew something about 3 feet high, but I didn't take any seed from it. What does onion seed look like? :o

    google Onion Flower and you will see the flower....in each little flower you will get 6 seeds....but if it flowered last year you won't be able to do much with what you've got.....it will flower again if you replant it.

    Yeah, I think it flowered. Is it worth planting, or should I just buy onion sets? I hadn't really thought about onions, but I do use a fair few.
    If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.

    To be honest; probably not....if you want onions then get a bag of sets or a bag of seeds and get them sow now in the greenhouse and planted out in 6 weeks or so.

    You can't do much with that onion apart from chuck it or put it back in the ground for seed. It's had its day - let it go!

    Does anyone know what I can expect from my kumato seeds? I don't know whether it's an F1 hybrid (which I understand to be what you get from crossing two different types of plant, in this case tomatoes).

    If it is, am I right in thinking that it won't produce similar fruit? If so, what am I likely to get?

    I'm afraid if it is trademarked then it is likely to be F1 so you would get some of each parent.
  • Re: onions, plant some seed now. I have still have the best onions from seed - rather than setts, but they need to be in asap.

    If I could work out which is which (although I'm not likely to have enough plants), could I cross them together again to get my kumato? :huh:
