Today I have planted 4 each of three chilli varieties, and some kumato seeds. That's all my little propagator will take. Once they're going, I'll plant some more.

And will someone please tell me what to do with that onion? :p

Get that onion back in the ground, let it flower and go to seed and collect the seeds and sow next spring.

Raised beds; you can use anything round them but I'd use the soil at ground level until you are happy with the layout of your veg beds.

Greenhouse - broad beans, peas, onions, leeks - you can get all these started now for planting out once the local frost date has started. Why don't you post a list of what you want to grow and we can interject as to when things need to happen.

the main thing missing though is where are you? there is a huge difference between south west and north east so it makes it harder to advise....a county will do!

That's very true Zazen. I used to follow instructions in gardening books and sites & wonder why everything died. Then I found that my local frost free date is the 1st June :D

Right then, I'm just about in the middle of the country: Walsall.

I want to grow some or all of:

Parsnips (some success in tubs last year)
Carrots (pleasing results in tubs last year)
Radishes (not very good results in a tub last year)
Spring onions (reasonable results in a tub last year)
Beetroot (poor results in tubs, good in the ground but only a few last year)
Turnips (mixed results in tubs - a few decent ones last year)
Runner beans (good results for the last couple of years)
Cauliflower (started way too late last year, so no success)
Tomatoes (loads of cherry tomatoes last year in the greenhouse, was eating them like sweets :D )
    Kumatoes (see first post)
    Chillis (no previous success)
    Gerkins (not previously attempted)
Swede (didn't grow well last year, but mrbadexample snr reckons you need a field to do it properly!)
    Rhubarb (easy peasy!)
Gooseberries (very small crop last year, but they are not in a good place & I need to move them, soon!)

 I need to dig up more of the "lawn".
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.

My greenhouse is not heated, and it keeps flippin' snowing.

I think I need it to warm up a bit before I start trying to plant stuff in it.

I think it flowered last year - at least it grew something about 3 feet high, but I didn't take any seed from it. What does onion seed look like? :o

Cool. What are you growing? My advice is to do it by weight of numbers. Plant loads of stuff - something's bound to work. ;)
